Pics!

i just started my Spring semester, and My advisor decided that he wanted a full draft of my thesis this semester, so i've been going nuts getting everything started and haven't gotten to take any pictures and such.

my bad.

I think I'll be able to get some pictures tomorrow and put them up.

if u did cut any can open, make sure u file/sand down the sharp edges some. i think it could look nice. how about adding in like a giant drain pipe- make it 'look' like polluted urban environment. and if u could find the 3 eyed fish fish from the simpsons, then you'd have nuclear mutant fish setup.

Good idea!
lol.

Keep in mind that PURE aluminum is actually poisonous to humans. That is why when you see anything aluminum it has an aluminum oxide, this is fairly uncreative so it keeps us from getting poisoned. I would personally not keep any metal in water.

Here is what I found about aluminum:
Aluminum

As with the other elements, aluminum is absorbed and accumulated in the body, and has been linked to serious illnesses including osteoporosis, extreme nervousness, anemia, headache, decreased liver and kidney function, forgetfulness, speech disturbances and memory loss.
Aluminum has also been widely associated with Alzheimer's disease. People who have died from Alzheimer's disease have been found to have up to four times the average amount of aluminum accumulated in the brain's nerve cells.
Antiperspirant
Antiperspirants contain aluminum that is absorbed by your body. It's best to avoid it all together and use simple soap and water instead. Deodorants aren't as bad as antiperspirants, but I would also avoid using them unless it was made from some form of baking soda.
Water
Aluminum-contaminated water is another significant concern, as studies have found that Alzheimer's disease is more common in regions where levels of aluminum in drinking water are highest.
To find out whether you may be at risk from aluminum and other toxins in your water you'll need to have your water tested by a reliable source. I've worked with AquaMD, a top-notch water-testing agency, to create the "Mercola's Recommended Water Tests"--and to make them affordable compared to other sources--so you can ensure the safety of your tap water today.
Other Common Sources

  • Aluminum cookware: Although aluminum pots are probably less problematic than the sources mentioned above, I personally would not use aluminum cookware.
  • Aluminum foil
  • Over-the-counter drugs: These include many antacids, anti-diarrheal drugs and drugs used for pain and inflammation.
  • Several douche brands
  • Some baking powders: Most baking powders contain aluminum as an additive, but health food stores carry non-aluminum varieties.
  • Refined foods, refined flours, baked goods, processed cheeses, and common table salt

Finally, I got you folks some pictures up. Yes, the cans have been cut open at the tops, i've bent over the metal, sanded down and all in all they seem to be fine. I also decided to go with a duck decoy with holes in it. I've never seen one in a tank before, and I'm an avid duck hunter. I've sunk decoys before by accident, so I thought it'd be something cool and different.

All in all, the tank isn't done, I need to get some kind of background on there, I think I'm going to add a few more cans, and I need to put more plants in. The plant in there now is one that I made using plastic plants from Hobby Lobby and some PVC pipe as an anchor. I have more to make but I just haven't had the time yet.

There are a handful of Zebra Danios in there. The filter I put on there (AC70) was up and running on my oscar tank for 2 months to get some BB ready to go. The zebras were only .50 cents a piece and while I'm deciding which kind of fish i want in there long term, the zebras are keeping the BB happy and will most likely end up in my community 20g in the long run.

Try getting some of those miniature roadsings and cars ect...That's be like a proper high way =]]Or some Roof tiles.Mossy plants would be cool =]]

I know its kinda late to make a comment on this, but if cans were really all that dangerous would they put billions of beverages people ingest every day in them???

your taking a chance, all aluminum in time erodes... how long i dont dont but in time it will and who knows what chemicals are used during proccesing... not worth it if you ask me
