Humans have this mindset that they can 'enhance' other living animals by messing with their gene pools.. it's part of the humans need to fulfill our greedy nature. We are the only animal that kills for 'fun' and forces other animals to hybridize for our own personal 'enjoyment'..

just look at the elusive Liger!
I personally reckon that pure breeds look the best! Don't really see the point of hybridizing. As for the high prices, I agree that they are just temporary. Take the FH for example, they were very popular a few years ago and now not alot of people are intrested in them (this is the case in China). Hybridizing just doesn't seem right, but we wouldn't want to go through this discussion again, would we?:popcorn:

:iagree: :nilly:

I'm not against hybridizing my point is putting two rays together & getting a hybrid out come and charging the price of a high end ray.
If you put the time in and have the breeding stock to produce F2 hybrids (Leo X Pearl (F1) bred into a Pearl X Leo (F1) getting a Leo X Pearl-Pearl X Leo (F2))....then you put in the work and effort. Not like getting a big pay off for what is a mistake, or an experiment to see what happens.
Dog breeds, didn't just occur after F1, F2 hybrids, it takes years & years to get a breed. It takes even longer to be recognized. The german shepherd link shows thows this and as far as inbreeding, it produces unwanted traits and defects, like hip displacia in sheperds and other breeds.
My point is the big money being fetched for these F1 hybrids.

Yeah, but... flowerhorns aren't banned from export and have a very fast gestational/reproductive period.. The market got water-downed very quickly, when it takes much longer to produce rays.

The price of Black Rays is not going down anytime in the near future..

I see your point, but I am almost positive there are NO F2 pups born in the US to this day. I think Mikes oldest F1 female is a leo/pearl but will still be a while before any F2 show up. SO, to answer your question, when all we have available in the US is very few F1 pups, hybrid or pure, people pay what they think they are worth for them. No one is forcing pups on anyone and people will always pay what they FEEL they are worth to them PERSONALLY. A big pay day for MISTAKE? LOL Thats just a lil biased but I will leave that alone. I see no plausibility in drawing conclusions from comparing wolves and dogs to rays, but whatever. Seems this discussion is more about the prices other people pay for rays they like, and why would that bother anyone that isnt jealous? Would you cry if I paid Mike 10,000 for a F1 hybrid (mistake) that I really liked? WHo cares, get over it! Im leaving this one alone, to each his own..

We have F2 pearl pups born last month for first time, Parents were captive bred from Frank. But you are correct in saying no F1 pups bred in the USA have ever produced F2 pups.

I see you are selling your hybrids, how is the secondary market for hybrid rays, you getting any response on your sell thread?

i have bred F2 p14 :D

i think you will see a lot more hybids around as lots of breeders in asia are just throwing loads of diffrent rays into ponds to see what happens

i do feel their is far to many hybrids around now and it shouldnt be done with black rays or we will just lose what we know as leo henlei P14

lets face it when most rays were wild caught we used to see a few rays that no one could ID which could have been hybrids

but over the last year we have seen much more captive bred hybrids than we ever saw wild caught

people can buy what they want at the end of the day but i will stay well clear of the so called SP rays

I remember a thread a while back, somewhere, one of the breeders was having trouble breeding his leos. He put in a pearl and they bred, I guess those fish are being sold .
