Am I crazy? Hybrids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
also i fogot to add my pups were from unrelated adults yet were classed as F2 so i do think you are wrong

In my dealing with captive breeding, I was tought F1 is the first generation born to parents out of the wild. F2 was offspring born to F1 animals and so on.

Hybridization in the wild is a touchy subject. It's all "rumors" and "gut feeling" at this point as to if it happens or not. No hard facts have been documented or published as to it happening or not.

As for line breeding, that is another one of those hot topics that will be debated for years. I know of a handful of aquariums that ONLY line bred to avoid introducing unpure DNA and mixing species to create hybrids. The general observation was that as long as it was not sibling to sibling, that it was turning out ok. It always went parent to offspring, or grandparent to second generation offspring.... I have seen it work. I personally want as much diversity in genetics as possible with collections I've cared for. But at the same time, I've been lucky enough to have that advantage of having multiple males/females of known species for doing so.

if so called line breeding was a good thing then why is anyone so bothered about bringing in new blood

line breeding maybe ok to bring out certain traits like more spots but this should not be promoted long term

this is why frank and nico have started chiping their rays to stop inter breeding

Most aquariums chip their animals for tracking purposes. I think that it should be required. Sure we know our animals, but with a place that has staff turn over, there is no way to keep track of which animal is which in the long run, especially in collections pushing 100 rays.

I think the idea of diverse genetics is best. I'm not sure captive ray breeding is well enough documented (even though it's been going on since the late 1960's) to say line breeding is good for the over all survival of a species. We need more record keeping and factual data instead of loosly repeated "experience".

because, as explained in one of the links that you didn't read, the F2 generation will start to show genetic problems from recessive genes

i did read the links nothing firm their and nothing from anyone with letters infront of their name

so if what you are saying is true then ALL captive bred asian arowana have some kind of genetic problems as the are F2 and beyond

how about you just read the links I provided. I didn't make these definitions, they are defined by the science, so yes, probably those aro certs are (technically ) wrong. Who 'classed' your pups? a biologist or a breeder who may not have such a clear concept of what is the actual BIOLOGICAL DEFINITION of F1 F2 etc?

my pups were called F2 by frank and nico so they must be wrong then :D

and the aro certs must be wrong

i am only going on what i have been told i maybe wrong

but you would think big time aro breeders would put the right info on their certs lets face it they are multi million $$$$ companys they must have done some resurch before publishing the certs

back in the 70's and early 80's i loved all the new and exciting african cichlids that were around. There colors were great, they were pure, and they kept there value. Now i really can't stand africans because of so many hybrids and just not knowing what your getting. There value is low now and petclub, petco, walmart, and kmarts type of places selling them as whatever name sounds good. Will this happen to rays? Will they go down in value? Will you be able to buy a cheap mutt of a ray at walmart some day?

my adults were F1 captive bred from wild p14 stock

making the pups they projuced F2

my adults were both F1 from diffrent parants so my pups were from unrelated adults

the whole world knows i cant spell its called being dislexic

as already stated i not to hot on this subject so all the info i have been given must be wrong and we should all sue the big aro farms

Lemme get this straight..... The ONLY way to keep pure blood lines is to imbreed? All arro certs are wrong? And Frank doesn't know what he's talking about?
