American Eel

Someday I'd love to see an American eel in Minnesota. They are also rare around here....You have better chances to find a monster trophy tiger trout in Minnesota than an eel :(

just read through this thread...got a quick question. I live on LI Sound in CT, are these the same eels that I always catch in marshes and creeks? and they the same eels that people use for striper bait? I have an 125g laying around and I would love to catch a small one and grow it out.

Yes.

My BS-O-Meter was going off reading this whole thread since I've seen specimens collected in Missouri, but after some reading in my "The Fishes of Missouri" book it seems that these guys really do make the journey all the way from the middle of the Atlantic and into streams and rivers all the way up here in Missouri. It's really incredible that the females come all the way up the rivers here just to swim back to the Atlantic in 10-20 years. What a strange and wonderful fish.

At that size any eel is 100% Female mate ;) Males dont get over 32" and mostly stay around 25-30".
Still sounds like a VERY awesome eel and awesome tank!:) Pics??
I thought that was the case also - but I've read several different cases of larger than normal male eels. Maybe it's a MD thing? The potomac river is known to house some odd critters. Regardless; I do know the females are the bigger of them, and was pretty certain it was a female all along. Something has me referring to "he" when I talk about it. I suppose her name (SUSHI) although sort of weird, could be a male or female name. :)

I'll post a few pics. Just gotta bear with me as I don't 'internet' from home. haha

Interesting enough, our local newspaper here in DE had a story on the eel population in the state. It was saying that our populations are thriving.

You coastal guys have the edge on us that is for sure - wish they got around here more often. Would kill to see one in my collecting net .

Update:
The bait shops start carrying them in early June. Hang in there , and please PM me if you want some. They are not expensive at all, seeing that they are sold as bait.
I'll try some out myself, now that I know they are in freshwater!

They start in salt, but if he is right about what he has, then they will become full freshwater fish.

I really hope to see some documentation, so we can know exactly what we are dealing with, but all looks good so far. Really excited for this.

I've had mine for over 2 years. He's cool when he's out, but that's really late at night when all lights are off and there's tilapia sitting on the tank bottom.
