American or African - Which is best?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've found Africans to be anything but boring. when set up properly, Africans are highly active, always displaying for dominance, breeding, and interacting. Ive had several Africans that will eat from my hand as well.

If you like aquascaping, that is another plus for Africans as they prefer lots of rock work and territories to defend.

but, whats most important, is what you like.... thats what you should get.

personally, I have both!

Stunning fish - lots of colours - I like. Aquascaping is what I am looking forward to more than adding fish.

then Africans sound like what you want.

remember Africans like to dig so the rocks must rest on the bottom so the fish don't dig under them and topple the pile.

African tanks (especially tanks like the one above) seems like complete chaos to me. With all those irrelevant colors and crowd of fish they really dont look natural to me. With large americans, you dont get vibrant colors like africans but you get multiple colors in one fish and they are BIG.

I, too, am torn between the CA/SA and African Cichlids. I've decided I'll have a tank of both. Probably the 55g or 75g will be the African tank and the 125g will be the CA/SA tank.

i used to keep Africans and have tried to keep them again over the years but I'm hooked on South/Central Americans. Africans don't do a thing for me these days.

ca/sa are way more rewarding and many have equal if not better colors than the africans... i personally don't think any african can compare with a female festae

I have had both over the years but I never enjoyed the African cichlids as much as CA /SA'S. I always end up trading the Africans back

thats why its important to get what appeals most to you. one person's idea of a cool tank can be seen totaly different by someone elses standards. thats also why it's so hard to have just one tank!

p.s. bonus points for comming up with somthing like "irrelevant colors"... not exactly sure what that means... but it sounded inteligent.:)

I love American, Africans are beautiful but they always tende to hide when I went near the tank. my american fish eat right out of my hands.
