American or African - Which is best?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've kept both, and enjoy both in their own ways, but I'm pulled to the americans. I like the colors and social behavior of africans, but the social and PERSONAL interaction of americans is not to be competed. And I hardly think ease of breeding is a good reason to keep africans. You're not putting dozens of fish in a large tank with the intention of breeding. If you look at it that way, fill it with convicts, they fit all of the same criteria. Ultimately....what do you want?

thats why its important to get what appeals most to you. one person's idea of a cool tank can be seen totaly different by someone elses standards. thats also why it's so hard to have just one tank!

p.s. bonus points for comming up with somthing like "irrelevant colors"... not exactly sure what that means... but it sounded inteligent.:)

English is not my native language. So forgive me if I used the wong word. Is "inharmonious" OK for you? You sound intelligent too...

inharmonious now that tells me something, and i actually agree. one of the struggles with Africans is maintaining a sense of color balance and not just buying every cool fish. sometimes i win that battle and sometimes i lose. my tank is very fluid and i cull it often.

by the way, i watched your videos ... nice GT

Can anybody suggest a good combo of large American Cichlids to keep in a 180gallon??
Thanks in advance.

If you look around, You'll find that most people mix and match the same fish lots of jags GT's, RD's, oscars.... just go to your favorite store and pick a bunch of different fish say 10 or 12, to start. Just make sure they are within an inch or so of eachother in size. As they grow most will have to be moved or sold until you end up with a mix you like. I am constantly shuffling fish from tank to tank and sometimes my favorite is not the nicest looking but has a great personality.

I kinda feel like I want to keep a couple of JD's and a couple of Oscars. If i consolidate one of my existing tanks which contains Pictus, Hoplos, Pangassius Iridescent Shark, Clown Loach, Chinese Algae eater, BlackKnife ghost - will they all live together harmoniously in a 150+gallon. Bearing in mind when I add the cichlids they will be the smaller fish at around 2.5-3" max.
Is it recommended that I also add the cichlids last if I do this?

Your question is confusing. What are you wanting to put together in a 150? Are you wanting to add oscars and jd to the fish you have listed in a 150?

Do some google searches on the Internet for the fish you are interested in, find some info and pictures. You could have a lot of fun with that size tank. Your first stock is generally not your last, at least you will change a couple of fish due to territorial issues and preference. Do you want a bunch of fish, or a few large ones? Whatever you decide, you can always buy/sell/trade/barter later, don't worry, have fun and enjoy!
