Ammonia in water?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Some of us on this forum get slated for making harsh comments and being elitist and I think this thread goes to show what a wealth of useful, friendly information is handed out.

Next time you have an ammonia test kit out please test the tap water just to rule that out as we have seen instances of trace ammonia in the water.

I agree mate I studied the forum for a while before I signed up and it's one of the best things I did, I can't thank you guy's enough for the help you issue out!

Toby thanks for the tip I have been constantly checking my tap water too however it is ammonia free, the ammonia keeps rising and falling somehow? Would doing 2 water changes a day be far too excessive or I am best off leaving it and letting the ammonia rise slightly so that the mini cycle goes quicker? Bit of a dilemma!

hey dont feel bad I have been battling high nitrates, was not a issue untill I got a pup and then for some reason my nitrates started to raise. i can controll them with w/c's but it was sure helpfull knowing my issue before it became a problem same as you. test test and then test the water again. test kits are cheap ! rays are not.

Do enough water changes to keep it at an acceptable level but not remove it all. Sooner or later you have to let your filter catch up.

Have you checked in the filters and around or under decorations for decaying food?

If it doesn't clear up in a few weeks you may need to go over your filter options but I would give it some more time.

I can't speak for everyone but I feel like everyone on the ray forum really wants everyone and their rays to be happy and healthy. I really enjoy everyone on here and their rays :)

As johno27 says...do enough to cope but not too much as to starve the bacteria.

I wouldn't use any ammonia remover in the filter as I think this prolongs things. Feed once per day for a week.

Your filter may not be large enough to cope or maybe the water volume is too low, keep an eye on it and you are 99% of the way there.

Thanks for advice guy's I thought I had it under control however the ammonia has spiked to 2.0 I done a massive water change and this brought it back down to 0 I really have no idea what is causing this?! If the ammonia isn't sorted in a couple of days I'm gonna have to sell the ray it's just not fair on it at all, I thought I was ready for this but obviously not, am testing the water 4 times a day and just can't understand what's causing this!

When you test the Ammonia, test the pH too. Especially test the pH when you get a positive Ammonia reading. You still need to be mindful of nitrIte too.

I wonder if there's not enough water flow in a 6x3 tank with just two canister filters. Hard to guess but this could be one piece of the puzzle. Also, I guess we could ask what bio media you have in the canisters..

I have 7x4x3 pond, 9 rays, 2fx5 and eheim 2080, they coop with 9 rays(not fully grown) , i feed 50 market shrimp or 150g fish filet every day(somethimes every other day), its not an recommendation. but it works fine here. Should mention that i change fairly much water in a week. Nearby 100% at thimes(in total). Lets be honest, 1 single ray pup does not turn the tank over just like that(?). But i find it weird myselfe that the ammonia bringt itselfe up like that. When did you maintain the canister last?

I little more info about the size of ray, size of tank, filter brand other fishes, what you feed, amount on feedings could help us a little more :)

Gl with this one, hope you get it going, and can sit back, change water, and enjoy your ray :)

That's what I mean I don't understand how one ray can pollute the water so much?! The tanks a 6x3x2 and is filtered a fluval fx5 and a sun-sun 2000 which is rated for a tank that size itself! There is nothing else in the tank apart from the ray, I feed the ray around 15 pellets on a morning and a few worms on a night, am currently changing 40ish% water a day!

what kind of media do you have in the filters?

Have you tested your tap water for high amounts of chlorine or ammonia?

Don't lose hope you can get through this, If the ray is eating that well you are doing a good job keeping him happy under the circumstances
