Ammonia in water?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Rays are more resilient than people give them credit for.

The reason your ray is still alive is because you are a responsible fish keeper and tested your water and acted accordingly with water changes to fix the problem.

I hope the rest of your ray keeping will be trouble free :)

Ph and temp have a large affect on the toxicity of ammonia, plus you are water changing to dilute the problem, many people have a more prolonged exposure at maybe higher ph and temp and who knows how bad the problem gets before they realise.

Rays can take a LOT more than people want to believe. I've seen them go over 2 parts ammonia and live. (Not that I would do that on purpose.)

Still don't understand what's going on guy's, I feed as normal every day, same time, same amount etc etc, however some day's I have ammonia in the water and others its free from it, does anyone know what's happening here? Why do I go a couple of day's without it and suddenly I have it back in the water? It's not fair on the ray, anyone in the UK be interested in him if it's not sorted?

Something is disrupting your bacteria in your filter or there is not enough room for bacteria in your filter.

Are you cleaning your filter a lot?

Maybe try adding more Bio media to your filters?

What kind of test kit are you using and how old is it? maybe try having your lfs test your water to see if they get the same results?

Where in the uk are you? If you are within an hours drive of me then I am happy to come over with loads of test kits and I will check the system to see what is wrong, we will get to the bottom of it one way or another, I am confident of that.

Hi Toby thanks for the more than generous offer! Shows how close the ray community is! Thank you so much however I'm about 6-7 hours away from you in the North East, Sunderland, have put the ray up for sale this afternoon as I hate what I'm doing, the 40% daily water changes are keeping the ammonia at bay (just about) for the minute but I know every day irreversible damage is being done to him, he's eating and has put on so much weight however if I was to kill him it would put me off fish keeping for good, maybe when I get something bigger like an 8x4 then ill give it another shot, totally devastated at the news :(

You really shouldn't give up, you just need to figure out what is causing the spikes. I hate to see you give up because I know you will take great care of the ray

Could you post some pictures of your filtration, mainly the bio media portion. I really want to help you get this sorted out! :)

I agree with John - you did your research, you test your water, you care.. It would be a shame for your ray experience to end this way. It's not the size of the tank - I have two black rays in quarantine in a 75 gallon tank and they're doing absolutely fine.

I'd put another filter on. It's the only thing that makes sense at this point.
