Ammonia in water?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what kind of media do you have in the filters?

Have you tested your tap water for high amounts of chlorine or ammonia?

Don't lose hope you can get through this, If the ray is eating that well you are doing a good job keeping him happy under the circumstances

First draws have filter floss for mechanical and the rest is a mix of ceramic rings and bio balls plus a couple of scrubbies to fill the tight spaces! My tap water has no ammonia and I am dechlorinating on every water change! The ray eats like a total champ he's constantly scouring for food and pounces on anything I put in the tank, however I think that's more to do with aquamans care than mine! How long can I expect him to live for if this ammonia continues to stay apparent? The last thing I'd ever want is for him to die on me!

If your ray is eating and showing no signs of stress, they can hang in awhile. Keep a lot of oxygen going for it to help.

I have 7x4x3 pond, 9 rays, 2fx5 and eheim 2080, they coop with 9 rays(not fully grown) , i feed 50 market shrimp or 150g fish filet every day(somethimes every other day), its not an recommendation. but it works fine here. Should mention that i change fairly much water in a week. Nearby 100% at thimes(in total). Lets be honest, 1 single ray pup does not turn the tank over just like that(?). But i find it weird myselfe that the ammonia bringt itselfe up like that. When did you maintain the canister last?

I little more info about the size of ray, size of tank, filter brand other fishes, what you feed, amount on feedings could help us a little more :)

Gl with this one, hope you get it going, and can sit back, change water, and enjoy your ray :)

The size of your pond gives much more stable volume plus the small benefit of surface area for bacteria in the pond. 2 mature fx5's may have 10 times the filter volume of 2 small canisters.

So far none of us have 100% pinpointed the problem but as the ammonia goes away and comes back again it must be that the bacteria in the filter is taking a while to break down the ammonia, either the filters are taking a long time to adapt or there is insufficient flow or space for bacteria IMO.

I wonder if one of the bacteria supplements like denitrol or the tetra start safe might help???

Bacteria supplements are just more ammonia. There is plenty already, just needs time to get the bacteria colony size up.

How long do you think this would be? Are using products such as ammonia remover recommended as a short term soloution?

Shouldn't have used the word supplements then....maybe the word culture would have been better. Defo not ammonia in the product, I have tested it. The tetra product wraps up the nasty and makes less problematic and does not slow down the process, I tested every day with no ammonia or nitrite....maybe this is a uk product?

I have used both without problem, the tetra one is very clear that you add only when fishnin tank...repeat no ammonia in this product.

I would NEVER use an ammonia remover other than water changes, I am talking about live bacteria added to the water.

I'm not sure what would be in a bacteria culture but ammonia. The bacteria is feeding on ammonia. If you start adding things to pull ammonia out, you are cutting off the food supply to the colony your are trying to get going... I wouldn't do that either.
How long will it take has variables. Surface area for the colony to grow on, water turn over and temp all come into play.

Keep keep waiting it out. As long as the ray is looking ok and eating, you'll be ok.

I do not think it has anything to do with ammonia, it is a suspended culture waiting to get started and colonise the filter, i did not believe it either but I tried it and it worked. My local lfs had a fire and lost everything, they started their whole system on this stuff and stocked in first week (lightly) without problems (see Maidenhead Aquatics fire, Farnham)

These basic details taken from both providers sites.

I have tried both with perfect results.

JBL Denitrol Bacteria Starter Concentrate
Aquarium-starter for the biological decomposition of pollutants through bacteria.

JBL Denitrol contains 10 billion (per 100 ml) bacteria of 8 different harmless species with synergic effects in a new style of formula. All bacteria species are coordinated to another.*

Tetra's newest product is truly a breakthrough. SafeStart® works instantly to create the biological filter that has previously taken weeks to establish. With SafeStart® you can add fish to a new aquarium right away.

Without sounding negative here how is my ray still alive!? After reading the stickies etc he's been subject to terrible conditions (which I am totally not proud of) ammonia was back at 0 and has been now for a day and a bit (total kiss of death there!) he's eating like a champ and really is piling in the weight! It's been two weeks today since he's been in, hopefully things will settle down now!
