Ammonia issue help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My 300 gal perfecto with 2 cornerflows is limited to a certain turn over which technically isnt enough for the load i have on it so i cant ever keep the water perfecty clear and i have a ton of flitration. Its not bad it just isnt crystal clear. Too much load versus possible turnover. I maintain no ammonia and keep water changes to 30 gal per day which keeps my biological in check.

What? 2 rays is too much for a 300 with supreme filtration????

I've got 13 rays and even more fish on my big system that is capable of destroying 2 pounds of frozen food in a single feeding and it's only cloudy at sock and RFS cleanings. Can easily see right through 10' of water.

IF I had Ammo readings there's no way I'd quit doing water changes.....

That's what I'm leaning towards..... Continued water changes

Mine has the corner overflows too but I'm using all four holes as overflows and plumbed my returns over the back. I'm running a dart wide open with 1 inch intakes plus a giant koralia in the tank so I thing I'm ok for turn over.

I have 6 rays and a 13 inch jurense in a 340. Never had ammonia issues and the water is always crystal clear. And I am far from supreme filtration compared to some of the other posters. Only time it appears cloudy is after feeding massivore and that is because of how messy it is.
Going to say a cycling issue also. As for as the water change I might reduce the amount at each water change but I would increase how often then to relieve the stress caused by ammonia.

At this point I'll try 15 percent 3 x a day see how that goes

How big are ur rays? How long have u kept that many together?

Did you mean 3x a day or a week? If it is a day, I'd agreed that is too much and you are not giving your filters a chance to cycle and balance out. If your tap water is chlorinated (which municipally supplied water is) then the chlorine will have killed off any beneficial bacteria found naturally in the water supply. With changing that much water, you are essentially flushing out your tank not allowing your beneficial bacteria colony to establish itself resulting in the ammonia spikes.

5 have been together for 3-3.5 yrs ranging between 11 and 14 inches. Recently added the 6th two weeks ago.
Also agree with Raymann, 3x a day would be to much.

My 400 gal going through a tiny sump that isn't even amazingly built like some on here. My nitrates are never below 80, get quite high, 25% WC week 1, 50% week 2. Rays are unbelievably happy and growing mad fast. Rays seem to love the older water, all about what they're used to. Less is more on a lot of concepts on here I find (though I'm excited to build a reactor).
