I did not read the whole thread so sorry if this has been stated already but the ammonia lock products will de-tox the ammo but I believe you will still get high test readings even though the ammonia is de-toxed to the fish.

ok well i bought some top fin bacteria supplement. an i checked the nitrate an nitrite levels . the nitrite level is 0 an the nitrate level is 5.0 right now ammonia level is still sitting around 2.0 though what should i do at this point just wait or add some more chemical to get rid of the amonnia .
what should my paramters be when i set up a new tank. my 55,s ammonia level is 0.25. an working on getting readings on the other nitrates an ph an nitrites. by the way i have two cichlids left an one of them dont look so good but the other bigger one seems to be fine i was thinking of putting them in the other tank since the ammonia was down lower in the new tank than my 40 galoon tank. what do you think

u should have some nitrate but try keeping it under 20ppm.
ur ph is fine, i would also check ur KH and GH just to be safe.

KH or alkalinity is a measurement of the waters buffering ability, or its ability to absorb and neutralize acid. Clearly the more alkalinity or the higher the Carbonate Hardness of the water the less likely you will incur pH swings in the water. It is therefore important to get this figure reasonably high to stabilize the water
GH is essentially a measurement of Magnesium and Calcium ions in the water. This is what is generally meant by soft and hard water which are terms people should be familiar with.
Water hardness affects fish health because it influences osmoregulation. Being open systems, fish are affected by the makeup of the surrounding water. As a consequence of osmosis, freshwater fish are subject to a continuous influx of water, while marine fish have to live with a continuous outflow of water. fish have to maintain a constant internal body fluid concentration, a process called osmoregulation.. The greater the difference in concentration between the fish’s body fluids and the surrounding water, the greater the osmotic effect. As hard water is more concentrated than soft, there will be less difference and therefore less water influx and consequently the fish will not have to work so hard at osmoregulation. This is particularly important in cases of bacterial ulceration where water can flood into open tissues.
