Update: new growth on the aloe, pending cottonwood, and maple.

The other two haven't put out any growth. I didn't expect the oak to, I was told they are really fragile at this age and expected him to take the rest of the summer to put on some rootage before growin more.
After experimenting, I have them in 3/4 shade. They get very early morning sun and late evening sun and are shaded the rest of the day. Seems to be what they like. Even the Aloe. The only thing in full sun is the agave.
I water them every morning and night if they need it. Except the agave. He gets watered when It rains. Lol.

Well, I learned something on this thread already. I thought a bonsai tree was a specific species, I didn't know it was more a style, and you can use different plants. KF, describe what you're looking for when you prune them. I was just looking up different styles, do you follow a specific pattern or just kind of wing it? I think I'm going to give it a whirl, it should make a nice LOOOONG term project for me. - N
Lol, so far I'm just winging it. I let my privet go wild and give it a haircut two or three times a year to keep it lookin good but let it do what it wants otherwise. The nursery I got it from already had it pruned a lot when I got it, inc some branches I would have kept and I hoped would grow back - to no avail. I'm just watching to see what it does. Same with the saplings. I'm just gonna watch them and see what they do. I'm super new to this, so I figure caution is best here. I just look at "wild" trees and say, "Yeah, something like that." So I figure I'll let nature do her job!
I know there are different techniques for training (wiring, turning the pot different ways to get a twisted trunk, etc), but I haven't had the courage to try any of them on my privet and I think my saplings are too young for any hardcore training.
Just go in the woods and pick a pretty sapling and repot it, lol, that's what I did. Post it here when you do.

BUMP - Update: On impulse, I buried half a crab apple today in a cup I cut holes in. lol. We'll see what comes of it. I put the other half under the deck so I could find it if it sprouted.
Any greenthumbs have a secret for sterilizing dirt? I have a bag that's been in the garage for about 2 years and last time I used it I noticed a couple of tiny bugs crawling around. I was thinking the oven but I'm not too sure I want to sacrifice a cookie sheet for cooking dirt. Any ideas? - N
I believe that the bottom one is a bradford pear.
I have been thinking about bonsai'ing a mimosa tree. I have no clue how to though.
