Lol, so far I'm just winging it. I let my privet go wild and give it a haircut two or three times a year to keep it lookin good but let it do what it wants otherwise. The nursery I got it from already had it pruned a lot when I got it, inc some branches I would have kept and I hoped would grow back - to no avail. I'm just watching to see what it does. Same with the saplings. I'm just gonna watch them and see what they do. I'm super new to this, so I figure caution is best here. I just look at "wild" trees and say, "Yeah, something like that." So I figure I'll let nature do her job!
I know there are different techniques for training (wiring, turning the pot different ways to get a twisted trunk, etc), but I haven't had the courage to try any of them on my privet and I think my saplings are too young for any hardcore training.
Just go in the woods and pick a pretty sapling and repot it, lol, that's what I did. Post it here when you do.
