Another sick ray thread........

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Geeze, that sucks. Try not to beat yourself up too bad over it, it sounds like you tried really hard to save them and gave them the best chance they could of had. Sometimes there is nothing you can do and nature just takes its course. I have a female ray that has been chewed pretty badly by the male. The rear part of her disk was pure white and torn/shredded. I thought for sure she'd die as she hadn't eaten for 3 days either. But she ate some shrimp today and seems to be healing. I think I got lucky. Don't give up, the female may still turn around.

sorry you lost her. cloudy eyes and a discolored disc is definitely a sign of a unhealthy ray. the fact that you have lost another ray unexpectedly. i recommend taking a good look at the rest and checking water parameters. when rays are unhealthy and especially new they seem to be difficult to get them to recover from my experience. once again so sorry

Round 2 here folks. The female didn't eat last night. She's real skinny. Has been eating the whole time but you can't tell by looking at her.... No weight gain. No ghetto booty. I have been putting a divider in there at feeding time so I can monitor her eating. Last night when she didn't eat I just left the divider in there.

I don't know what would be wrong with the water that is affecting the wild caught rays but not the ones I've had. The pond has 5 rays in it. The 4 I've had longterm all seem fine. VERY active and eat till the food is gone.

Seems very strange that they all just seem to take a turn for the worse all at the same time while NONE of my other rays show any symptoms of stuff being wrong.

I really am torn as to what I should do here. Obviously if I move her out of the pond it needs to be into something I can get the water volume down in so medicating is financially possible.

I will salt the pond tonight (there is absolutly NO salt whatsoever in it now)

Open for suggestions......... black worms and Prazi at 2X dose in QT tank?

Still don't know if I just have wild caught rays with internal parasites or if there is a bacterial infection of some kind. Beings that there is no weight gain could this be a parasite problem and the male just didn't eat enough to fend off death like the female was doing?

my guess is there is a bacterial infection that is now making its way to others in the tank... i hate to say it but you might need to treat the whole pond

Better safe then sorry I guess........ If someone can recommend a med for a large scale treatment I will get it ordered today.

Is a bacterial infection caused by parasites?

I agree with turkey, I think the entire tank might be infected now and a domino effect may be taking place! I realize its very expensive but I would treat the entire pond just for peace of mind.

I have no problem doing this...... I like peace of mind. Besides if the rays are as healthy as I think they are treatment shouldn't phase them right?

Just need to know what I should treat it with.....

Still wondering IF internal parasites lead to a bacterial infection.

do you have a UV??? be would take care of anything in the water....

I have a few pics of the male that passed. He had a strange red blotch on him belly.
