Any advice on P. Polleni?

I didn't see anyone flaming? Suggesting that a tank is too small isn't flaming, it's someone trying to help by providing a bit of info. Now if someone started attacking the OP for keeping the fish in such a small tank that's flaming. So far it's only a comment and one that the OP should consider. When it comes to tank sizes I'm personally guilty of overstocking, but some fish it's generally impossible to do with cichlids are one of them. Not just because of their size, but their disposition. In such a small tank where would the subordinate fish be able to flee to? If you want to attempt mixing cichlids usually a large tank is recommended so that they can flee each other. Some have had luck severely overstocking them as a way to disperse agression, but in my opinion it's not a recommended practice. Firstly it's an experiment(you may get lucky and find a group that comm's well, but it's doubtful), you'd constantly be losing fish to aggression until you found the right mix of cichlids and temperaments to work. Secondly disease in such tight quarters with so many fish would wreak utter havoc in the tank. If anything broke out in all likely hood the whole comm. of fish would be decimated due to proximity causing the spread of disease to run quickly rampant. Personally I think a Polleni is a great looking fish that doesn't need top be in a comm. they make an awesome central fish. I would still recommend a larger tank for even one though at least a 75 in my opinion. Now so it's clear I'm not attacking, just giving the benefit of my opinion and experience the OP can take it or not, it's his/her choice his/her tank.

My flame comment wasnt aimed towards anyone, Its just threads like this tend to end up that way.

I've come to associate any thread that has to do with small tanks, puffers or rays with flaming. There's a lot of it going on here.

Just to clear it up before it happens, there is a pond in which the RTC can go to when it comes time and after that it would make a mean soup.

In your (less than) one month of time here you've decided what should and shouldn't be on MFK?

Did I make any comment about what should and should not be on MFK? All I have stated that I have grown to associate threads that dealt with the above to end up in a big flame fest so that goes to say, in my limited time on here, as you stated, my mind has been conditioned to make that association.

and as for the month thing, I was a member of this site I think back in '06 or '07 but prior to my recent registration I took a short hiatus from the hobby and could not remember nor retrieve my past log in.

So before you derail the thread by passing judgment or pulling some seniority bit on me, there's that just to clarify.

Let me share my experiences with my Polleni... had him now for just over 16 years roughly and in that time i've tried keeping him with tank mates on 3 occasions...

1st time: Polleni was bought with another chiclid at the same time (can't remember which species) they got along okay for a while since they were both small at the time till the other one past away about 6 or 8 years later...

2nd time: I had a friend whos tank leaked and had to temporarily house his fish with my polleni, i thought it was be okay based on his old tank mate, but the polleni was NOT happy and literally tried to tear the other fish to shreds the minute he was put in, so naturally i took it out and placed it at an LFS i know and trust...

3rd time: My dad decided to get the polleni a friend to hang out with (again thinking back to when he had a tank mate), and again the minute the other fish touched the water he went straight for it and was quite literally ready to kill it, so again i took it out and returned it to the store...

But one thing i've noticed with my polleni at least is, they are very aggressive fish... they will even charge at almost anything, including you if your cleaning the tank... i've actually had my polleni draw blood on 2 or 3 occasions when i wasn't focusing on what i was doing while cleaning his tank...

Beautiful fish, but they definitely come with the behavior to boot in my experience...

Polleni don't like similar shaped or colored tankmates, means competition. The spangling on the salvini, will bring on aggression, and in that size tank, there's no place to hide. You'd be fine in the 42gal with tetras or rainbows too small for it to swallow, or cichlids that have a totally different look. You need minimum 150 to provide an escape route.

Wow that's a long time! How did his original tankmate die? My polleni hasn't tried to come after me yet and hoping it won't
