Any advice on P. Polleni?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah. still a bit young but id guess its a male from that shot. look for markings near the gill plate and a spot on the dorsal. usualy blueish black. bellys get red early too. easiest way ive found to find a female salvini at a young age. good luck. i love polleni! keep us updated!

I also think it's a male and the polleni seems to be a male too but won't know for sure until he gets bigger.

These markings and spot is to ID a female or male? And will do

Petspoiler: my polleni has since a juvie been in a 60G tank...

Aclockworkorange: yes, you read that correctly, i have a 16 yr old polleni...

Homer, I'm guessing that polleni in more available territory account for the successes with tankmates.
of course, no guarantees.
I have a little male kenyi that got worse in a 75. He's kind of psycho, and can move like a torpedo. LOL.

I'm not 100% sure what you meant at the beginning there? I guess you meant its more easily available here?

If thats the case, then actually not really, its only been recently i've started seeing polleni's being sold over here again...

I think he meant that your polleni probably didn't rip #%*^ up in a community tank because he had more territory available to claim

Oops, sorry. I should've read that before posting!
No, I'm speculating about some polleni which do better with tankmates: They're probably in really big tanks, and if they have more 'territory', can be less aggressive.(?)
Maybe. LOL.
Some people say they can be real beggars, like oscars.
You must really like yours, keeping them for so many years! 16 yrs is fantastic.

So i should just be looking for markings near the gills... any specific kind of markings?

easiest way look for bright red belly, black/blueish dorsal, and near the gill plates they tend to get a small black dot, splotch, patch. very small. use the others as indicators mostly. look up female salvini on google images. theres tons of pics. dan from coa has another variant as well. theres a few pics on google of that salvini if i remember right.

I do agree a larger tank might help, especially with enough caves and driftwood etc that could break up the lines of sight...

Now as for how big a tank would you need its hard to say considering the potential size of a single adult...

Tank size is definitely good to disperse aggression. Anything else? We got dither fish, breaking line of sight, and big tank.
