ANY alternative snake food?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's alright.

I agree and disagree with you...I think whether a layperson seeing a snake being fed depends GREATLY on the keeper who is doing the "demonstration." I think that a responsible keeper demonstrating how to feed a f/t rodent to a snake using tongs would be a good way to show her what good husbandry is...however...there are a lot of keepers out there that feed for shock value, so it really depends on the individual keeper's husbandry practices.

Knowing how she is, I dont think showing her would make her feel better, probably worse. I think the best idea would be to nondiscriptly sneak a mouse in and feed the snake without her knowing. Also, I will try to locate some snake bites. I dont plan on getting anything bigger than a corn for now. Actually I was thinking about a sinaloan milk snake, or a sand boa (which only get about 2').
And responsibility is not an issue... she knows how responsible I am. I actually do maintenance for a myriad of pets, and I work in a pet store taking care of the animals there, so thats not the issue. And she doesnt mind snakes, since she has several times suggested that i find a vegetarian snake or even a cricket/fish eater.
I am going to look into the sausage things, and if all else fails, I will say they can eat eggs and discreetly feed mice. My mother doesnt come home untill about 7, and my father is only home on weekends, so It would be easy for me to secretly feed after work. I dont like lying but she is being impossible.
Thanks for the replies and suggestions guys, I will try reasoning with her more

Heh... I remember when my mom wanted frogs, she thought there were vegetarian frogs...

Well today, walking home from work, I found a 20 long in the garbage :)

It was a total ***** to carry home, but I got it home, sterilized/cleaned it, and set up the tank with a flexwatt agri-heat tape thingy, some "keepers choice" wood substrate, some driftwood, and a rock hide. The guy at the pet store said he could get me some of the little sausages. I realize they are difficult to find, so I am going to use them Veeeery sparingly, feeding mostly mice, and just pretend i am replenishing the stock of sausages :P

how do people find these things! Glad you could get them in...

do you mean how do we find the sausages or the tanks? If you mean the tanks, I have found a 55, 30, and now a 20l in my small town, just walking around. Im sure If I patrolled for em I would have lots of em.

And The guys seemed pretty sure he could get them in for me, but if not, does anyone have any nearby stores that have them or know any places online? I would definately pay to have them shipped to me.

EDIT: BTW, is there anything healthy I could feed a snake, like a regular pork sausage or something, that I could make more appealing with that "mouse maker" scent stuff? I figure the sausages are made of steak... could I use something similar?

Yeah, just mean the tank, you must be lucky lol
They aren't made of steaks... they are made up of ground whole animals encased in sausage skin (minus fur and intestines) although like I said earlier I don't think they will release exactly what's in them (i.e. what animal/s). So no to your sausage question or similar "human food".
