ANY alternative snake food?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah... but as I stated the fat percentages are a little different. Could be any rodent/chicks or mix... or I guess what ever else.

i realize that you have found the snake sausages to be okay, but....

there are insectivorous snakes. the rough green snake and the smooth green snake. both are aboreal and perfect for a 20 gallon long flipped on its side. they are pretty snakes, and easily handled. they are also easy to come by. do a quick google search and you'll know all there is about them.

good luck with whatever you decide

I had a texas rat snake in high school that would eat eggs. Not store bought though, they had to be fresh and still smell like a chicken's ***. That may be worth trying when your corn gets big enough.

Yes, they're easy to acquire, but all are always wildcaught and heavily parasitised, with very few not refusing food. In short, they usually do very poorly in captivity. Get a garter instead.

There is no alternative for you. Either you tell mom to get over it or you tell yourself forget it! There just isnt a way around a largish snake not eating whole prey items.

yep, thats what I have unfortunately come to realize. My mother is never home really and the snake only needs to be fed every other week... it wont do any harm if she thinks it is eating sausages ;)

I see what he's saying...just keep a few of the sausages around in order to maintain the illusion that is what he's eating...while sneaking mice into the house to actually feed to the snake...

I do think that you'll get caught eventually...its only a matter of time! I still think that taking the initiative to do things around the house, clean your room w/o her asking, and things like that, will show her that you are making an effort to be responsible and she may be more willing to be a little more open-minded about getting a snake that eats mice. She probably figures if you can't even handle doing basic chores, keeping your room clean, etc, how is adding a live animal to the picture going to help things?

Just my .02....

thanks man, but responsibility isnt an issue here. I have, and am the only one to care for, many animals. I always do the things you have listed. She knows I am pretty much self reliant. The only issue is that she hates the thought of feeding mice.

And if somewhere down the line I get caught, so be it. I doubt she will make me sell the snake. She will probably get over it in a month or so anyway. Thats how she was about crickets as well :)
