I've more or less pieced together my tools over the years. Only thing I would say I spent a decent amount on true bonsai tools were my concave cutters. Think I paid about $30 on those some years ago because a good set of concave cutters are important for wound healing when loping off a good size branch. Other than that most my stuff is pieced together from various places like some Fiskers sharp trimmers from a garden center, couple good scissors from my fly tying tools, couple small forks and metal pet comb for root rakes root combing, and other various items I have found filled the need over the years.

It was in a shady spot in a lot behind my house.I have had my eyes on it for quite a while and the other day I finally got around to digging it up.I was worried about it dying as it was in a rather tight spot for working and I wasnt able to be as careful with it as I would have liked to have been.
It's leaves started wilting on the second day and I feared for the worst but this morning I was pleased to see that they have nearly recovered back to their original firmness.
Cool. Just keep it in a shady spot and out of full sun for a couple weeks. Newly collected ones need a few weeks to recover being dug up before they are put back into full sun.
With that trunk you should be able to do some interesting carving/shari to it down the road and have a nice tree.

Thanks,I suspect that it is the remains of a butchered and long neglected azalea.....as you can see I have a bread bag twist tie holding a broken branch section in place in hopes of healing it.I injured that part while digging it up.
Today's haul: 3 mugo pines, 2 short needle pines, and an olive tree for $20. End of season sales are starting so check those nurseries! This place is normally double and triple the price of my normal haunts, but at 75% off I couldn't resist. I'm gonna clean them up a little and post a better pic this afternoon.
Cleaned up the dead needles and did a quick trim to open the trees up a little. The olive tree was wild so I cut it back and wired it up quickly, so we'll see how it turns out. Let's hope they survive LOL
