Nice elm! You're absolutely correct! Either start with those young, 1gal plant, or get them pre-trained from the nurseryI'm bad at caring for my bonsai but early training makes a big difference. The trunk needs to be shaped while young. Otherwise, its near impossible to change as time pass.
I cheated and bought mine bare root but pre-trained. It came in as a 3/4" twisted stick about 12" tall. I believe they were imported. After 15 years, the trunk is 3" in diameter.

Thanks Rock.That is the pot that the plant came in when I bought it a few years ago and I would keep it in there if the pot didn't have thise cracks that I just noticed the other day.
