Any FOWL keepers out there?

All but the barnyard mix are pullets. The feed store owner takes back any unwanted roosters, I assume to eat, so hopefully they turn out to be hens.

I have way too many roosters at the moment. I found this boy a home over the weekend. The guy who bought him has over a dozen hens that needed some extra protection from all the hawks around where he lives.

Interesting,the rooster wards off hawks?

To some degree, yes. Roosters are very protective of their flock and good ones will risk their life to defend it. I've seen mine chase after hawks that land on the ground and if they could fly that hawk would be in trouble if it landed in nearby tree! My roos weigh about 10 lbs. a piece so they're more than a match for most hawk species in PA other than Red-tails. You can even tell when a hawk has been spotted because they make a growling sound to alert everyone.

There are people in certain parts of the city here who keep large groups of roosters in their yards and some them complain that the hawks come down and kill them. They must target the younger smaller roosters...I've been under the impression that a rooster was no match for a hawk.

I think it really depends on the size of the rooster and breed. There are all types of chicken breeds and some like Seramas don't even get to a pound while other breeds like Jersey Giants can approach 13-14 lbs. Then there's the temperament of the breed. Some roosters can be down right crazy like Old English Fighting Game or others can be puppy dog tame like Silkies and Orpingtons.
