Any FOWL keepers out there?

Ahhh...the classic cartoon duckling, very nice! My fiancee wanted to get some of these but I'm going to wait and see how my Khaki Campbells do first. Have you had ducks before? The hens can be really loud (they do all the quacking, the males are pretty much silent).

No chickens? Hens barely make any noise.

I'd love a peacock but they are really loud and my grumpy old neighbor would shoot one if it walked into his yard.

Ya, I kind of sprung the ducks on my poor parents. They put up with a lot of animals already. My mom always had ducks as a child though. Only one of my neighbors knows I have the ducks, and they don't seem to mind, but I don't want to push my luck with chickens as well. Plus the chickens need a full coop, while the ducks can have a secure run and a plastic doghouse for a shelter. We have lots of wild mallards and wild geese in the pond behind us and up the road as well, so the quacking should blend into the environment.

I'm try a little experiment with one of my reptile incubators. I'm curious to see how well I can hatch guinea fowl eggs with it. At the moment I'm trying to get the humidity inside to drop to around 40%. It's about 10% too high right now. I might have to use a bowl of dried rice to absorb some of the moisture.

Picked up 6 Silkie chicks this weekend. I've been trying to find a few of this chicken breed to keep with my lone hen.

All your chicks are adorable.. and the duck babies are the sweetest...... i love your dog too... i have chickens.. 2 rhode island reds..2 leghorns and 2 buffs.. one being a buff rooster.. Buffy..lol......... great egg layers.. i did not think we would make it through this wicked winter..they started their molt late and had huge areas with no feathers on their bodies for warmth.. there is a feed called "feather fixer.". it worked miracles.. they grew all their feather back in time for those bitter cold below zero nights... the rooster has a little black on his crown..frost bite......... here they are this spring.. healthy and happy

Beautiful birds Liz, they look fat and healthy! :)

My birds were a bit spoiled this winter with me leaving a heat lamp on for them. That and the fact that their coop is insulated. Still, one of my roosters got a small bit of frostbite on the tip of his crest. I guess you can put vasoline on the exposed skin to avoid that. I'll try that next year.

we cannot use heat lamps in the horse barn..too dangerous.. it is insulated... but still very hard winter.......thanks !!!

10 keets (chicks) hatched out of 12 eggs. Not too bad!

I've got another 2 dozen eggs I'm going to add to the the incubator now that I know it works.
