Any FOWL keepers out there?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I picked these two up on Friday. They are pekins. I'd love some more, as well as chickens, geese, and peafowl, but my subdivision won't let me have more than 2, and no chickens or geese. I might try to get away with a peacock though.

Ahhh...the classic cartoon duckling, very nice! My fiancee wanted to get some of these but I'm going to wait and see how my Khaki Campbells do first. Have you had ducks before? The hens can be really loud (they do all the quacking, the males are pretty much silent).

No chickens? Hens barely make any noise.

I'd love a peacock but they are really loud and my grumpy old neighbor would shoot one if it walked into his yard.

Really...a peacock?

That would be awesome to have wandering around on the grounds.

We have been keeping chickens for about fifteen years, mostly for eggs but we have raised a few batches of fryers. We have had as many as 25 or thirty chickens at a time, but we lost so many to Bobcats and other predators that we quit letting them out. Now we keep four hens, they live in a 6x6 coop with a 6x10 run out the back. We have one Barred Rock, one Buff, one Red, and a little black Polish.

A few old chicken photos, plus one of my neighbor's Tom.

By the way, I love the Guinea Fowl, Seth!

Yeah, my neighbor is really old and hates anything with a pulse. He warned me that if any of my birds ever come onto his property he'll shoot them. This includes peacocks I guess!

Knock on wood but I haven't lost any to predators and we have coyotes, foxes, bobcats, raccoons, hawks, owls, skunks, opossums in our neck of the woods. But last year I lost one hen and 7 guineafowl to my neighbors dog who got loose. I was at work and they were out free-ranging on my property. Now I only let them out if I'm going to be home.

Pretty birds Dan, thanks for sharing!

Thanks Dan, me too! I'd get more but they just range soooo far somedays. And now that they're a year old they seem to be exploring more.

Exactly. And they are pretty hearty birds from what I've read about them and seen.
