Ugh.. Some Clarification.
Poopsmart is right. They are opportunity buy fish that rotate every 3 months.
It has nothing to do with "lack of sales", it has everything to do with discounting to remove fish and make room for new ones. They rotate fish to include new variety and interest more advanced hobbyist.
The obliquidens cichlids were slated to go into the same tank as the Frontosa. Obviously they would kill each other, so they want to try to remove the Frontosa's from the store before the obliquidens arrive.
If anyone is interested in the opportunity buy fish before hand, PM me and I could give ya the inside info, as I get the list, prices, and designated tanks months before they arrive. I knew about the Pike Cichlids 3 months ago.
The supply of opportunity based fish is also based widely on region and distribution. PS hosts a half dozen or so distribution centers around the country, each one has a differentiated merchandisers and purchasers. Whoever is doing the buying for each DC, will likely determine the species of fish that are "Vaguely" ID'ed, such as spotted corydoras. It is a supply and demand issue, and obviously the exporters can not keep up with the demand of 24 corydora Julii per store, per week, x 1000 stores.. So, they order whatever is 'spotted' and available. Thus, the picture tag has the scientific name "Corydoras spp.", as it is varied.
The Pike Cichlids right now are a mixture of Crenicichla Sveni and Crenicichla sp. "Bellycrawler".. I got 2 Sveni and 8 Bellycrawler in last week. The Sveni are sold, but I still have the others. Only a trained eye could differentiate the 2.. The distributors at PS were simply trying to meet the supply and demand of the opportunity buy phase by purchasing as much as possible, no matter the species.
Sometimes fish, especially seasonal ones, will become unavailable.. or, opportunity buy fish will be such hot sellers, the DC's can not keep them in stock (ie: brilliant raspbora).. I am interested to see how long I can keep these new Hybrid Synodontis in stock at my store, because I have been selling them fast even at $20/ea.. but being a captive hybrid catfish, can supply meet the demand? (these are the coolest synos ever by the way, but they are like 1/4" and I bet you didn't SEE them!!)
No PetSmarts that I am aware of use RO or DI units in their systems, it creates too much instability. For area with poor water quality, they use pre-treatment vessels, dosing chambers, alkalinity blocks and chloramine removal chemicals.. each diagnoses is based on each stores tap water source. Almost All PetSmart stores fish systems are ran off drip systems, creating a 24/7 water change.. hence, the allowance of high stocking levels..
If anyone actually knew the amount of money and extent PS went to in order to create an optimal environment for the fish alloted, you would all be very surprised.. Let's just say CASCO fish systems are the Cadillac of fish systems, while PetCo and their MARS systems are a bit "Pinto".. I have 18 feet of UV sterilizers to back up that statement, too.
Heck.. I had a $100 sale to the store manager of the PetCo down the street yesterday..
If anyone ever wants the "facts".. just drop me a PM.
