any tips on re sealing a 220 gal. aquarium to hold water again?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my 220 needed to be resealed in the same spot i just went to home depot bought the 5 dollar razor blade set with 5 replacement blades and took out all the old silicon than used accetone to make clean surface than just bought more silicon and sealed it back up didnt take it apart and been holding up since july and still no problems.

ok well it seems like all of you great friends in the hobby are saying don't take the panels all apart yet, i will gut the inside all seams(why not) clean, and re apply a nice neat bead on all, dry 72 hours for cureing time and then water test, i am gonna take some pics as well

i just was a little Leary on doing it this way because i have heard mixed opinions in the past most in the past evan aquarium places told me i have to take it all apart and start over with the build which sounds like a pita lol

As long as you get the glass perfectly clean it will seal.I usually use a supersharp wood chisel to get most of the silicone off then razors then scotchbrite then razors again.Use a caulking gun to get a nice smooth bead.Wear rubber gloves, you will get it on you and its a pita to get it off.
Use a gloved finger to smooth the beads into the orners.

Somewhere on here I read about someone using a plastic spoon to get the right bead shape.. Sounded smart enough to make me remember it. If you use your finger its easy to get inconsistencies.

I personally would give it a week to cure. I did a 150 gallon (took 3 tries), gave it 72 hours to cure only to have it leak. Third time sealing gave it a week and all was good. Just my personal experience. GL

thanks for the heads up trent, yeah i also heard a spoon as well i never heard a week before 72 hours most say but why not wait the extra 2 days or so, did you reseal any differently the other times then the first?

No, but the first two times I re-striped it the silicone was still wet so I know I didn't wait long enough. Maybe I put too much on. Not sure I just know it sux redoing it over and over.:irked: When for me If I would have of just waited it would of been good the first time. GL to you.

one thing i just thought about is how about the outside of the aquarium? redo the seams on the outside to? the leak is pretty fast or at least seemed that way when we moved the tank, and water came right out

not stubborn or anything but would it be a bad idea just to take the panels apart and re build it? i just wanna sleep good at night lol
