Any1 know alot about bichers

I personally think that a 40L, 40 Breeder, or 55 g would be a good starter tank for a small upper jaw such as a senegal or delhezi. Max size for regular senegals is 9-15. That is a range. 9 being the lower end and 15 being the upper end. The average of those numbers is around 12inch. Typically CB bichirs do not grow as big as WC. If very concerned, can do a short body albino senegal or reg albino senegal which typically do not get as big.

Remember this is a starter tank and the owner can always upgrade as necessary. Although a bigger tank is always better, a 40B/55g is great way to see if the hobby is for you imo. Would suggest 55g if possible.

I kept my sons dels and sen in a 65g tall tank, have the same dimension as a standard 55g.
I grew them from 2" to 7"-8" and they were still fine and comfortable in the tank. Even if they hit 10" mark which idk how long it will take them they will still fit perfectly cause the tank is 42" long and 12.5" wide

You want to look at the upper jaws. They are perfect for a tank that size.

Ex: delhezi, senegalus, palmas complex, retros etc.

Would avoid ornate, weeksii, and teugelsi due to their large potential size.

Post in the ancient section under polypterus. Better responses there.
Exactly what i have all them mention are great polys

One of the biggest reasons for the common names not carrying their weight in recent years is stores mis-labeling (weather on purpose for more profit, or on accident). Once you can match a name to a face, keeping and collecting gets much easier. I've gone into stores before and because of mis-labeling they'll have a $300 fish labeled and priced as a $50 fish. The more you can know about bichirs and identifying, the better of you'll be. I'd suggest just going through old threads with pics and names that identify them, you get to see differences from fish to fish and it's really enjoyable seeing just how different they can be.
Yea lot of stores don't know what they sell or mixed up names i bought a delhezi senegal and a albino the guy charge me 3 for 20.00 lmao when i was looking at the del they put a tag for 50.00 tbe other 2 were 20 each they are same size 5 inch and maybe he gave me deal but i wont be buying a del for 50.00 nuts

He said oh they.all same lmao maybe he funny but they really are not

Havr you seen a 14 in sen ? Do you knkw how long it would take ?

Sizes in this section can be vastly over stated. Just because some has x fish and it grew to x size doesnt mean they all will

Sp. Delaware is 7 ish yrs old only 18ish inches while other sp.s are over 20.

The tank is fine
Dam that took long time to grow

I've had my 6-7" Sen for 6 months now and I don't think she's grown very much much if at all. I bought my first Sen 7.5 months ago at 2.5" and I think it just now hit 4-4.5". They grow extremely slow.
They do grow slowly compared to delz palmas or other polys of course lowjaw are huge

if you get them at walmart check them before you buy a couple times I gt home and had to throw them away because they were dead and moldy however they have gotten better. I also buy from academy it's the same price but are usually fresher
Never get polys at walmart petco or pet smart most are neglected or they dont know the true facts of polys i seen these rookies throw tetra flakes lmao so avoid fish from here they never live long watef always cold and they look too off like not authentic fish go to a good local aquarium tropical fs
