prime (for cost) only in my tanks with the exception of the qtank/hospital tank.. they get treated as needed...

To me, you're clearly generalizing all chemicals as harmful. There are advantages and disadvantages towards their uses however your above post indicates to me you were using a chemical with copper sulfate in it. Copper sulfate especially when not chelated can actually destroy all invertebrates.
