Anybody-- old old car buffs.. need to ID ???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
on really old cars the bumper jacks hooked into a hole in the extra heavy duty bumpers that they all had. they were NOT sturdy and they wobbled like weebles, and cars fell off of them with amazing regularity. which is why our modern cars no longer have bumper jacks or bumpers that are worth the time of day.

I'm rethinking my original statement. It's a giant crossbow puller.

I honestly don't know what that thing would be used for.

So they had bumper jacks back in the 20's... because i always thought they started in the 40-50's... i am trying to figure out how this contraption could have been used as a bumper jack...if one hook went on the bumper where would the other hook go... this is a mystery ............ thanks so much for helping though..

i am thinking it held the wooden spokes of the wheel in place ..when you needed to take the tire off the mount... "rim".. at least that is what i am thinking..:nilly::nilly:you are close.....

Not really a car guy but it kinda reminds me of a come-along? Maybe?

I think it is a bead strecher for mounting tires.

That probably isn't too far off. Tires didn't last long then and your average joe wouldn't have a rimming machine. I'd go with that. What size wheels were on an 20s essex? If it's similar to the size of that thing in a relatively 'unwound' position....I'd say you've hit the nail on the head :D

this was my essex... i think you guys are doing good, maybe seeing the car will help too..

Its a clothes dryer you hook the two bottom hooks to the spokes on the rear mounted tire and hook a hanger to the top hook and while you drive down the street your shirt dries. :-D
