Anyone else view thier fish keeping as therapy?

No need to disclose my illness, as it's not life threatening, thankfully, but I suffer nonetheless. I view my fish keeping as a kind of therapy as when I am taking care of my fish, or talking about fish (like on this site) all my problems seem to melt away.

Anyone else view thier fish keeping this way.

But don't get me wrong it's fun too. :)

I know what you mean, after coming home from Afghanistan I was having trouble relaxing and everyday life seemed overwhelming. SO one of my buddies told me to get into fish keeping so I did. Fish keeping allowed me to find something to get my mind off everything. I now have an entire room dedicated to fish tanks with just a recliner to relax in.

why would I want to quit a hobby I've been enjoying for almost four decades? just because I enjoy it when I'm in a good mood instead of a bad mood?
you don't have things you enjoy doing more when your suffering less? why haven't you quit those?

No offence meant brother. I said I would personally get out of the game if it was something that didn't calm me down when I was feeling blue. That's it. Me personally. Peace.

I am sort of bipolar I think, even though I was never diagnosed, my mind tends to race on certain thoughts especially when I am stressed about something. Without my fish I would probably be a lot worse, but the hobby allows me to focus on taking care of my fish. I can sit and watch my fish for hours and it relaxes me. I'd rather have fish then some kind of medication. What better therapy than that?

Therapeutic as in keeping me from worrying about what to do with all the extra money in the savings account.

Seriously, just going through the normal daily and weekly maintenance lets me zone out from the garbage I put up with at work.

Yeah same here. I like doing water changes. Nice to zone out and nice to know you're taking good care of them

You hit the nail on the head. I agree.

I view it more as preventive medicine than therapy :D. It is a major stress reliever for me. Sometimes I just need 5 minutes to my self to sit in front of the tank and veg. With out it I would definitely be a more stressed individual and need therapy. On the other hand when I leave the LFS I wonder if I need therapy cause I just spent more money on my fish.

Watching fish has been proven to lower heart rates which I think would translate to extending life as I view stress as the biggest killer in America.

I view fish keeping as very therapeutic(it let's me escape this wretched reality every now and then lmao :D)

The only thing more relaxing than watching my fish thrive/go about their normal routine is a long empty country road on 2 wheels and time with my wife and son.

As far as "hobbies" are concerned, I've yet to find one that I enjoy as much as fish keeping.

It's definitely not for everyone but for the people that enjoy it, it's definitely one of the great spices of life. ;)
