I found my first Morels yesterday in a burnt out clear-cut. The weather has finally been getting warmer, so there should be lots before long!

Mushroom hunting is a great way to get out in the woods. You see a lot of things you would walk right past if you weren't searching every inch of the forest floor. Last fall I found an adult-phase Pacific Giant Salamander and spotted a Boomer (Mountain Beaver) on the same trip.

Anybody else found anything this year?

Awesome!!!

I'm actually doing my Master's on a topic related to forest mycology... I can't get enough of fungi :D

It is weird... I've been doing lab work, reading about, and thinking about mycology non-stop for the past couple years... and I still can't eat mushrooms :) I tried eating some morels (dried ones) twice in the past few weeks and liked them, but aside from that, something prevents me from fully enjoying them. I think it is the texture...

That doesn't prevent me from going mushroom hunting for others though. I collected some beautiful specimens of King Bolete, oyster mushroom, horse mushroom, puffballs, saffron milk caps, etc. this year. Boletes are my favourite - they look awesome and are fun to look for. I always find them around fly agarics, which are neat too.

I live up north so the season is delayed; morels won't be out for another 3-4 weeks. But I'm working all across western Canada this summer, and I can't wait to start collecting :D Morels are beautiful, can't wait to collect and dry a whole bunch.

I've been thinking more and more about mushroom hunting as the summer gets closer - thanks for the pics! It is awesome to see others enjoying it, instead of being scared of wild mushrooms :)

Those are some nice looking mushrooms! My personal favorite to eat are the Hedgehog Mushrooms, they have a nice, firm texture - not slimy at all. Boletes are awesome looking mushrooms, around here they are often full of worms (unfortunately). I found one beautiful black truffle this spring. Have a great summer collecting!

I've never tried the hedgehog mushroom; I saw lots one day in the fall but they were too rotten...

I saw this MASSIVE king bolete in the fall, one of those you see in books and are in awe of... but the thing was like a sponge full of worms :( You definitely have a small time period to collect a bolete before the bugs get them.

Finding a truffle would be awesome! My prof likes to do work with truffles, and always tells me to keep an eye out for squirrel digs on the forest floor, and that if you dig down a little you'll find truffles there.

I'm so pumped that I'll be on the west coast this summer... you guys are so lucky, you have mushrooms popping up for such a long time compared to my area... boletes in the spring!? I'd never expect that here!

Thanks man, and good luck too. Hopefully I'll find some nice burn sites too, I can't wait to find some morels!

Just curious - how do you cook them? I tried dry ones by rehydrating them in cream, rolling them in flour with pepper and a bit of salt, and frying them up in butter. So good  I'm going to try pasta with morels this summer.
