I've never tried the hedgehog mushroom; I saw lots one day in the fall but they were too rotten...

I saw this MASSIVE king bolete in the fall, one of those you see in books and are in awe of... but the thing was like a sponge full of worms :( You definitely have a small time period to collect a bolete before the bugs get them.

Finding a truffle would be awesome! My prof likes to do work with truffles, and always tells me to keep an eye out for squirrel digs on the forest floor, and that if you dig down a little you'll find truffles there.

I'm so pumped that I'll be on the west coast this summer... you guys are so lucky, you have mushrooms popping up for such a long time compared to my area... boletes in the spring!? I'd never expect that here!

Thanks man, and good luck too. Hopefully I'll find some nice burn sites too, I can't wait to find some morels!

Just curious - how do you cook them? I tried dry ones by rehydrating them in cream, rolling them in flour with pepper and a bit of salt, and frying them up in butter. So good  I'm going to try pasta with morels this summer.

We are pretty lucky, there are mushrooms to pick for 8 months a year. I wasn't very clear, the truffle is from this spring but the Boletes are from last fall. Your prof is right about the rodent-pits, rats and squirrels LOVE truffles!

I like to cut them up fresh and cook them in a little butter and salt on a very hot cast-iron skillet. mmm...

dan i hunt mushrooms and i plan on going this weekend to my father in laws--he owns alot of land and usually has some good shrooms.. nice pic btw

Cool! What kind of mushrooms do you find back there?

All the mushrooms I posted pix of are edible (and delicious!). Of course, DO NOT go foraging based on this thread!!! There are many look-alikes out there, so don't risk your life and liver on something you aren't positive about.

Deleted any drug references on here. References to use of illicit drugs is not allowed.

so are those mushrooms you guys posted all edible?

also, always wondered are there real medical applications regarding poisonous ones?

Thanks. A lot of people bring up "that kind" of mushrooms when the subject of foraging comes up.

All the photos I posted were of mushrooms that I ate (except the Admirable Bolete, it was worm-ridden). I am fairly certain that Acer's photos were all edibles, but you can't be sure from a photo. Again, DO NOT USE THIS THREAD AS A GUIDE TO PICKING WILD MUSHROOMS.

As far as medical uses for poisonous mushrooms, I don't know any specifics, but there undoubtably are many yet to be discovered.

There is a chemical called coprine found in shaggy manes:

I'm sure you guys have seen them on your lawn. Anyways, they are edible and taste good, BUT if you drink alcohol within a few hours/a day after eating the mushroom, the chemical causes nausea, your face to flush, vomiting, etc. They used that chemical to help recovering alcoholics get over their addiction - take the pill everyday, and if you have a relapse, you'll be feeling REAL sick a few drinks in!

Fungi have saved millions of lives thanks to the antibiotics they produce. Virtually all land plants depend on fungi for nutrient absorption, and if it wasn't for fungi that break down wood, we wouldn't have any nutrients being put into the soil.

When I first learned about fungi I was amazed - they are so important, yet we never learn anything about them!

Most mushrooms in my area are either edible or won't hurt you (they may not taste good though). Most poisoning cases result in upset stomachs, but there are some that can kill you. One cap of the Destroying Angel can kill you apparently.

The standard mushroom people think about (fly agaric), the red one with the white spots, will make you sick and see things. They are beautiful mushrooms and were used in some societies. One of the cool uses is that the caps were soaked in milk, flies would drink the milk, then fly around like they were drunk and then die.

Mushrooms are so much more than the few ones used for illicit drugs. They demand respect, but are also fun to learn about. When you learn about the plants and fungi in a forest, every walk is like a scavenger hunt.

Yup, I really like mushrooms :p
