I've never tried the hedgehog mushroom; I saw lots one day in the fall but they were too rotten...
I saw this MASSIVE king bolete in the fall, one of those you see in books and are in awe of... but the thing was like a sponge full of worms

You definitely have a small time period to collect a bolete before the bugs get them.
Finding a truffle would be awesome! My prof likes to do work with truffles, and always tells me to keep an eye out for squirrel digs on the forest floor, and that if you dig down a little you'll find truffles there.
I'm so pumped that I'll be on the west coast this summer... you guys are so lucky, you have mushrooms popping up for such a long time compared to my area... boletes in the spring!? I'd never expect that here!
Thanks man, and good luck too. Hopefully I'll find some nice burn sites too, I can't wait to find some morels!
Just curious - how do you cook them? I tried dry ones by rehydrating them in cream, rolling them in flour with pepper and a bit of salt, and frying them up in butter. So good

I'm going to try pasta with morels this summer.
