eihim is the only way to go with canaster filtration.

If your going to promote a product at least spell it correctly. There are many brands of filtration most are good some are bad. I have heard mostly good things about the FX5. One member here even has a sight dedicated to the FX5.

However, the FX5 will not do anything towards reducing you algae bloom. Algae`needs two things to thrive, light and nutrients. You need to work on reducing these to control the algae blooms.

Try doing a couple large 50% water changes within a couple days and keep the tank in total darkness for 3 days. This usually will get rid of the algae.

To keep it from coming back you will likely need to reduce light and increase the water changes.

I probably had been keeping the lights on in there too long I'd say from 8 am till about 9 pm... but now I'm keeping the lights off to try to make the problem go away... Also, I am thinking of switching to that filter does it use alot off electricity? Or will keeping the lights of and putting up curtains be enough to get rid of the problem...
That is probably your biggest problem right there. I don't turn my tank lights on till I get home from work @ 4-5 pm and turn them off around 10 pm sometimes a little later. I feed my rays at 4 in the morning with just the room light. I very seldom even have any algae on the glass of my tanks. Keep lights off and up water changes for a while should take care of it.
As for as electricity. I added two new ones several months ago and haven't seen a difference in the electric bill.

also that is a great website u got there. i ordered a part from of links on there.

The FX5 is a good filter however the way the lid is designed is total $hit. these lil orange cylinders hold the bolts in place so u can turn the nobs to seal the lid. they break very easily. cost 10$ each to repair. also takes forever to unscrew and re-screw the lid.

You are the first to report this issue that I have seen. Others have said the cover gets warped and cracked and then they make a thread asking why their Fx5 leaks or makes bubbles. Afterall, the knobs are only plastic, they don't need much pressure and they will not break if you tighten them finger tight, just a big snug is all you need. :)

There is an oring in the cover which seals very well with only a snug fit. All those screws are only to keep the lid from being forced up or loose by the 190+ pounds of pressure that is put on the cover after the pump shuts down.

ok i'm gonna start a new thread about the algae problem and post some pics, thanks everyone for the insight into the filters and help about the lighting...
