Apple vs The FBI

Btw, most district/school policies state that electronics are not allowed in the classrooms. This applies to faculty, staff, and students and is also reinforced with different procedures. So it goes to show you that in the end she had some fault. Knowing students are nosey than a mf.... why in the world would you leave your phone out on your desk where students commonly pass by. I am a science teacher and my school does not tolerate any electronics out period. If you have it out, its your fault; teacher or students, **** gets taken all the time.
We are all aware that the teacher has some fault here..The kid knew right from wrong though and deserves to suffer some kind of consequence for his actions.

You're a teacher, do you lecture your student with that kind of language/potty mouth? What area/school district are you teaching? Most school districts in my state have issued teachers with iPad, some even have iPad for student to use, so the policies you stated must be out-of-date. My 6th grade daughter can bring her iPhone into her classroom, as long as she turns it off during the class. She can use it during break or recess time. There're several computers in her classroom for students to use. My 4th grade son classroom has iPad for the students to use an hour everyday. Both of their teachers take roll call via iPad.

Hello; I was teacher for 32 years. I would not let a cup of coffee out of my sight because I knew what would happen. If I did lose sight of the cup I poured it out. Letting a cup of coffee out of my sight and then taking a drink would be dumb, not sure that it can be classified as wrong. My take, from what I understand of the situation, being that the teacher was dumb but not in the wrong.

If I leave my keys in my car that is dumb. The one who may take the car is the criminal and a thief. The kid was in the wrong.

I last taught in 2004. There was a school rule in place about students not using phones. I tried to enforce that rule and ran into more problems than it was worth. It was one of those rules on paper that was not enforced by the folks above me in charge. There were no restrictions at that time against teachers having phones that I knew of. (This may have been before smart phones. I have never had a smart phone so do not know.) I always turned my cell phone off while in a classroom and working. I also did not take pictures of my junk.

How could that rule against students not using their phones not be enforced!? I don't get it.

Hello; Let me use an example of another rule. At one point the school board of one public school system I worked for was upset about the number of absences among the students.

(Keep in mind that daily attendence averages determine the money available for a school. This is one reason why many schools used in-school schemes in place of suspensions or expulsions. That way the attendence can still be counted. Those in-school detention rooms were always full and a real pain to oversee.)

Back to the example. The school board passed a rule that students who miss too many days were to be automatically failed. I kept track and failed those with too many absences. At the end of term the principal called me in to inform that he was going to override me as was his option. That kept the parents and grandparents happy. Guess what it did for overall attendence?

To the point of the phones. If i tried to collect a student phone there would be a fuss right at that point. Often resulting in a standoff where I had to throw the student out (high school grades only as middle school students cannot be tossed out) and call the office staff about it. I also became responsible for the phone if it were misplaced. My plan was to tag and bag the phones in individual bags which I turned over to the office staff. The office staff would give the phones back to the students as soon as they showed up between classes. Most teachers just did not fight it. I got to where i would ignore all but taking calls in the classroom and often just asked them to put the phones away.

By my experience there were a lot of "sounds good rules" in school handbooks that were not really enforced. The folks with the juice did not want to deal with the flack from the parents.

We don't have to have our phones away in most of our classes. The teachers know that they'll always be in trouble if they take away a phone because someone's parents will be upset. Plus most teachers don't care if you don't care. If you have an A in a class and have your phone out its often overlooked, but the kids who are failing and on their phones are called out on failing and are told to put their phone away.

This all boils down to our new society.... nothing is your fault. Its always someone elses fault for what someone does. No accountability. I said this before and i'll say it again. I dont understand what the teacher did. The pics were Personal, on her personal phone not the schools phones or pc. If that were my kid i would have kicked his ass then been the first one to help this teacher fight for her job back.

Rule written by human, can be bent, changed, or used at your or any other human's discretion! The golden rule: the one, who has the gold, rules! ;)

Our NEW society? I believe it has been that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. When did they change that?

jlnguyen74 jlnguyen74 i agree but dont see how that applies we do know the teacher left the phone on the desk, kid got up, opened the phone and the rest is history.

I do think there has been a shift in how good/bad right/wrong is viewed.

I guess its parenting if that were my kid forst thing i would have addressed is why did he touch something that doesnt belong to him, why was he iyt of his chair without permission? I guess these values arent widely taught. Discipline
