I was curious what some of us are spending on their electricity bill... and if any of you can give me a ballpark figure on how much aquariums affect the bill itself.

For example... I have 9 tanks. Last month's electricity bill was $191.00 for a two bedroom apartment in a month when we used no heat and no air conditioning. The man we spoke to at the elecricity company has a three bedroom HOUSE and he spent $135.00 for the same service.

So what gives?? Am I the only one?

Our bill was around $100.00 cdn if it makes any difference. I have one 10g tank but we have alot of electronics. when I didnt have the fish tank it was around 80 or so.

Here is my estimation on an Excel spreadsheet (in CAD):

seriously I have 35 tanks and figure $100-150 a month is probably due to my fish in the winter:screwy:

I have a house by myself with 3 tanks. The bill use to be about $50-$60 for my house with 2 tanks. Now, it's about $70-$90 a month.

Our bill said we used 64,000 kw for the month... I've got a one gallon with a little air pump and a tiny light, a three gallon with an internal HOB and a light, then in all the rest of the tanks I count 8 strip lights, none more than 40watts, 9 HOB filters ranging from crappy little topfin 10s to emperor 400s, 1 canister filter and thats it. I've long since ditched the heaters and air pumps in an effort to save a little bit of money, and the tank lights are only on for cleaning and feeding.

Wait.... HOW MANY?! I thought my nine was bad.... WOW!

Yea when I bred mostly guppies and bettas I had 30+ tanks that added up to 300g or so,then I took a 6 year break from fishkeeping
I have about the same # of tanks now but its about 1200g now.
And compared to some of the guys on this forum,Im just dabbling

I use gas heat to heat the entire hatchery instead of using drop-in heaters. No individual tank lights (except for taking pics). One blower runs all the smaller tanks. Power efficient (mostly Dolphin) pumps on the larger tanks. Insulated the walls and attic to the max. Installed double insulated vinyl windows all around.
Electric bill for the 117 tanks is about $92/month
Water bill is $47.18/month (fixed rate-water, sewer, trash, Em. services)
Gas bill is $85-$125/month depending on how cold it gets in the winter. Gas bill goes to $0 from about mid-March to late September.
