Hey, seen this post and it looked like you needed some info.. don't know how he's doing now.. I have a yellow niger uro that I just picked up..

I used this Ground English Walnut Shell substrate for my guy: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/235215/product.web

I used a Mercury Vapor bulb for his lighting, and I added a towel over that side of the tank. Temp reaches 115-120 no problem. At night the tank drops to 75 F.

For food, he's got 2 dishes.. the first dish gets all of his lettuces, and veggies.. and the second bowl is where I keep his 16 bean soup mix. I do plan on adding bird seed, and a few other dry goods.

he is doing great, has grown an inch and a half.
i dont use walnut shell because it has jagged edges and isnt good if he swallows it
his heating is great
as for food mine loves cactus along with lots of other things

The walnut shell bedding doesn't have sharp edges, as it's a fine sand like substance, and if you have dishes for it's food, its very unlikely he will eat it.

^ there are way cheaper options than walnut shells that are just as good if not better.

I paid $ 12 for a 25 lb bag. I wouldn't call that expensive.

i didn't/wouldn't call that expensive either. just saying there are cheaper alternatives, even free, that will do an equal or better job.

the way he would eat them is he digs,in the process flinging it into his bowl

and he could do that with any substrate.. even the sand mix you have in the tank pics posted.

I find that sand sticks to things easier than the walnut shells.

i am well aware he could do the same with his substrate, the reason i said that was because it happens to me and can happen to you...also should someone who just got a lizard and said "i knew the basic care" when buying him be giving advice to someone? also do you have a uvb bulb for yours, you only mentioned a heat lamp

I did not say I had a heat lamp. I only use mercury vapor bulbs. that is the only lighting he needs.

I said I only knew basic care when I bought him. its called reading and learning.

I have other reptiles that require the same care.
