I'd look for a much bigger tank to even start growing it up in. If you're keeping it long term, you don't want any form of stunting during it's younger stages in life.
Hey the OP lives in a Tropical country, Philippines where I used to lived in too. I did grow my arapaima in a 75g tank till it got to 16" and moved it to a big pond.
Here was my big outdood pond back in the Philippines. 21x15 feet and the deep varied from 5 and 8 feet deep.

thanks for the reply guys. im more inclined in getting an arapaima than an arowana and im thinking of using a small tank to inhibit its growth. planning to upgradte to 140gal in may

Sorry to burst your bubble but an arapaima will last two months in a 75 and by July a 140g won't even be big enough. PLZ think really hard if you want to get one. They were if not still are considered the worlds largest FW fish.

sounds perfect! i'd just use under gravel filters also. they never have to be cleaned. you probably wouldn't even have to change the water since it would be such a big tank, once you put it in the 140 that is.

why is it everytime someone ask a ? on here a bunch of know it alls get on here ant try there best to make someone look bad and make themselves seem like they know everything. first off we keep many fish that get large. spotted gars get huge but i never see people bashing anyone for having it in a 75, also it takes pimas years and years to get really huge and reach sexual maturity and all those huge pima you see in all the photos are very old fish. thats why all the large fish adult lenths in the wild are getting smaller because we arent letting them live to the ripe old ages they used to, its kinda like how every body says you cant keep dovii they get 30 inches plus but i havent even seen people with 20 in dovii really because most the dovii you see are a couple years old but not 6,7 8years old. the correct answer would have been you can keep a small pima in a 75 gallon for a little while but his tank will need to be upgraded as he grows and will eventually need very large quaters. also another thing is people with fish tanks generally overfeed there fish in a quest to get them big fast fish dont just eat all day in the wild like at our homes and the go many days when the cant find food at all so it takes awhile to reach these large sizes, the funny thing is most of you fish experts will never see your fish max out cause youll probally kill him from trying so hard to get your fish big. i dont care how big a fish gets when hes born hes not just swimming aroud in open water they usually start in small pools and pockets in the water as the grow they move closer and closer to the larger bodys of water sames a starting a fish out in a small tank and moving him up as he grows
Il be honest,i dont know how quickly arapaima grow, but im pretty sure like most predators, they grow fast or they die,so upgrading to a 140 is surely a pointess excercise as it will just need a bigger and bigger and BIGGER tank quite quickly and the op also said he is trying to inhibit its growth by using a smaller tank
The only reason it will be small is that it will be dead from stress!
I accept that the op has not told us much info about how big the fish will be when he gets it or how long he expects to keep it in a 75 etc but his 2nd post about inhibiting its growth and UPGRADING to a 140 says it all to me,why when he has probably seen a huge one on natgeo or something, would you want to stunt the bl**dy thing?
I really want a tsn but i wont have one because i know what size it could POSSIBLY get to and this will not grow as big in theory as a pima, i mean you could say that some of the above silly posted fish would be ok for a while in a 75 but you wouldnt do it.
Would a fw croc be ok for a while?im going to do a search now
For what it's worth to the OP, most who have sucess keeping arapaima start them off in round 600 gallon pools or bigger. And even then they out grow the area quickly.
