Arapaima Pond Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Some teaser pics of Mr.T. and the pond. Early morning it looks great.
Got about 100 feeders in there, schooling fish, flashing through the water...amazing sight.

he's going to be super happy to be in there...

i'm sure it's been addressed, but after seeing the episode of River Monsters with the jumping (almost flying!) arapaimas, is there some sort of protection in case he decides to take a leap?

In the first picture you see the white plastified metal fences? Those will be all around, tie-wrap'd to metal all around the pond.
Only in the middle there's a section that will open inwards, rest all fixed.
This, together with the sun-roof and the back-wall, hopefully prevents him from accidents.
It will also keep out birds, cats and other critters that might get him jumping, but the main issue with him jumping lies with fear or hunger. Keeping him well fed with plenty of feeders in there and his normal food will avoid him jumping for food.
With a full cage around it, including the roof, there's no food flying around to get him jumping except maybe some insects, but he's not interested in small stuff if he's not hungry.

Haven't seen him jump yet, except when scared, which only happened during his two moves (from Yellow Bin to pond and with his pond to new location). It's of course a matter of concern when it comes to transferring into the new pond, all bright and clear, but we can only wait, hope and see on that.

At least it's Thursday already. Can't wait for time to pass. Hope tomorrow to buy some stuff, Saturday fix a lot of things.
- Bring up sand for the side and back.
- Drill holes in the settling tanks for the Skimmer, Pump-out to the bogs and overflows.
- Need to fix some cement-work, just to be 100% sure.
- After cement, straighten out liner at the front and 'fix/hold it in place'.
- Start hanging the side-netting.
Need to buy more once the first couple are ok. Hanging those is easy. Once done, finally move Mr.T. and cut up his old pond-liner for the bogs.

Those wondering about the updates...yes still working on it.
Finished the skimmer drain, only need to cut the liner.
Had to empty the pond again, which I managed today,
There where some nasty spots I did not trust, so started pumping out the water and dragging the liner to the middle.
From there, together with one of my workers, pulled out some stones, an iron rod and put in more old nylon bags under it.
Straightened out everything and still managed to get water in to above the air-diffusers.

Did also finish the second diffuser, much better piece of work and runs perfect.
So tomorrow off again, then Wednesday filling 100%.
Got 4 tilapia in there, friend gave them. They love it, though not sure how long they will survive...lol
