Arapaima Pond Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Been busy with work, house, family and not much news anyhow, except the normal growing of fish.
But a quick update, just to let you guys know I'm still on it and enjoying it.
Mr. T. is his normal happy self. With Pa'Boss (that's how my housekeeping lady calls the RTC) growing as fast as Mr. T in his initial year in the pond.
The RTC amazed me in his growing. He's about 2x the size as the pictures above from 30 April. Chasing around with Mr. T. Both quite happy with each other.

Feeding prawns is really funny now, both of them competing, but surprisingly, Mr. T is just ok with the RTC going around his mouth just to see if he gets some of Mr.T's prawns. Still hand-feeding both of them. With the RTC getting all frisky and snapping and splashing around. He's big, especially compared to his 'cousin' who I just released in the grow-out/Koi pond yesterday. Just to think that both where the same size 3-4 months ago, and his cousin did not grow much, while Pa'Boss just exploded size-wise.
Goes to show that space is a very critical factor in fish-growth.
Will get the 2nd RTC on steroids (prawns) to catch up and there's lots of smaller fish to chase for him in the grow-out pond.

Had a surprise visitor yesterday arriving home. A turtle had walked in and after a bit of waiting, I put him in the small bog at home first, some pellets in and sure enough he was chasing and eating them within seconds.
Eventually, he decided to climb out again, started walking towards the pond itself, jumped in and the same story.
Went out to the market, came back, sure he was gone. But this morning, back at the corner of the pond and after throwing in some pellets, plomp..in he goes getting his breakfast.
We'll see if he makes it a daily routine. Not gonna try and stop him from escaping, just let him come and go as he pleases.

Cheers,
Luc

Thanks all for keeping this thread alive. Had a major Algae explosion, which ended up in dark green pea-soup. Not the prettiest sight of course, but decided to clean out the right-side filter. drained the water, cut out the steel at the front, got massive clumps of root/soil out, which caused water to start channeling, loosing the effectiveness of the filter.
But the next Saturday (3 August), we washed the stones, put them back in, closed up the front and started the pump again. Result amazing. From dark green, we're now at almost cristal clear water again in only 3 days.

Short video, not much battery left, but just enough to see a bit of Mr. T, misty behind the diffuser is the big RTC.

Did some fishing with a throw net as well 2 weeks ago, caught out a bucket full of the Tilapia. Barbeque was nice..
Still more of the Tilapia to go out in the next couple of weeks, I'm ok with all the other fish.

Amazing Clean water after 3 days....

Will take another 2 Saturdays to plant the filter again, clean up the mess and have it look decent again and then get onto some other details I want to change for a long time already.
