Are arowana cannibal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 3 silver aro in the tank together. My original one was 16” when i introduced a 14” and a 9”, no aggression happening even now. No chasing and fighting, all 3 live in harmony. I tried to put the 5” jar in them last week, it was there for 15-30 min but took it out cause the odoe pike was trying to chase it and maybe trying to eat it, but the 3 aro dont even care that the jar was there.

Another question has anybody ever tried putting a small aro with a bigger aro? Any type of aro.
Do you think it could be similar to the poly discussions? Meaning just because somethings bigger and can eat a smaller tankmate doesnt mean it necessarily will ?

Similar, but we know that poly are more optumistic when hungry, also we know that poly can be cannibals even with they young ones.

I dont see it. Numerous small fish kept with mine no issues even after goong a week with no feedings. I think those cb endlis give the rest a bad reputation lol

You had an ornate go cannibal right ?

Yeah i agree it can happen with any species but i wonder how common it would be with aro's

Yes i had a ornate ate other poly. See here is the thing, most cb endli will likely eat a small poly, thats when when ppl breed the poly they take out the eggs right away cause even the parents will eat their own fry.

With arowanas even most are CB they dont seem to eat thier egg or fry. You and me seen multiple videos when they will catch the male aro and they open its mouth with full of fry. If the male aro wanted to eat the fry then it will be easy for it. Thats why i wanted to ask if you think a aro big aro will eat a smaller one.

This is what had me thinking it would "possibly" work. Having never tried it i was curious to see what the consensus would be.

Ime predation in polys is overrated. That said it could definitely happen but ive not seen wc poly eat tank mates as small as 3 to 6 inches. Only time it has happened was with cb.

Out of curiosity did you ever keep other small mid/upper level fish with your aro's ?

Im just wondering if arowana can become cannibals. Alot of fish will eat the same fish if given opportunity especially with a large size difference.

I know when arowana take care of its babies, the male will hide the babies in its mouth for a certain period of time.

So my question is i have a 20” silver arowana’s and i wanted to add a jardini about 5”-6” big, do you think that the silver will eat the jardini. Someone told me that it should be fine since we havent heard of any case that a arowana being a cannibal. What do you guys think?
you know what they say, if it fits, it sits. If it will fit in their mouth, they'll likely eat it, I've seen tetras eat guppy fry (my lfs didn't take fish at the time because of fear of disease, so I had to cull the fry), my killifish also ate slightly larger guppies (around the size of a grain of rice), I've heard of goldfish eating neon tetras. Fish are opportunistic feeders, when something fits in their mouth, they think it's food and they eat it

I did have the pinktail chalceus with it, aro was 16” and pinktail was 5”-6”. I also put a oscar before that was 3” but never bothered it. I also have a gar that is 6” with it before.

But think about arowana’s in the farm have fry in there mouth, idk how many aros in one pond but when they are ready to take the fry the use nets and they catch the males that carries the fry. So think about if the other arowana eats the fry wont they just seperate the male that carries the fry in the take instead of leaving it in the pond.
Im not saying the aro wont eat another aro bit those arowana have alot to loss if arowana are cannibals right.

It’s a 50% chance that it’ll work harmoniously, and 50% chance that it won’t.

Yep, and in the case it won't, it doesn't necessarily have to involve eating/cannibalism -- when they get big enough jars are known to sometimes just snap and kill the crap out everything they can in a tank, just for the fun of it -- and there may be no warning signs of such impending doom. Then again others have no problems, so I guess the question is how lucky is someone feeling :)
