Silly fish.

Graham

first time i ever seen a gar eating some veg..

think they'll eat basically any edible thing that comes their way. i know solomons would eat algae wafers:D

My gars don't go after plant matter, per se. However, they need the nutrients, vitamins, amino acids, etc. derived from plant matter. In the wild, they normally receive these through devouring herbivorous/omnivorous prey species.
But, if your gar likes zucchini and other veggies, let him enjoy them. They'll only benefit him and his health.
Mine do snap up veggie sticks. But, I figure it's because they resemble the earthworm and aro sticks I also feed the tanks.

couldn't you get the same benefits of feeding on herbivore fish by having feeders that you "gutload" with veggies? In the long run, i would worry that a deficiency could arise with a lack of a carnivorous diet.

He's mainly a carnivore -primarially eats lancefish. Tries for pellets but usually misses! The cucumber went in for a gibbiceps plec, but didn't get that far :)

I'll make sure I leave a few pieces floating in the future for him to get if he wants!

I guess an omnivorous diet couldn't hurt. very strange gar though!

I have come to the conclusion that gar are just plain weird. But that's why we love them, right?
