Very personable, easy fish to keep.

Water quality and breeding keeps more advanced aquarists interested as they strive to have the best possible quality in their fish.

You haven't owned one have you? I think the people that hate oscars obsess way more than the lovers.

I owned one about 5 years ago, but not since. I don't think they look that nice, and there are a lot of other cichlids I much prefer, with just as much character. I don't obsess at all about it, in fact I'd never really thought about it before. But seeing as almost every post in the new posts section was about oscars at the time I thought it would make an interesting thread; which so far has. But the options for the poll are a bit extreme I think a scale would have been better, but definately it seems they have to be one of the most popular pet fish around.

I wouldn't use the word hate.. Dislike is better. Kept one a few years back. Very active fish but the colors don't look that great and they produce too much waste. I honestly don't understand the hype with Oscars either. Theres plenty more cichlids out there that would trump the Oscar in personality/color etc.

What the hell is marmite?

It was an ingrediant once in the show Chopped. Some sort of nasty yeast paste found in britian.
