Hello there,

I read that feeding frozen stuff to baby arowanas can cause digestive problems, what about adults? Do you feed your aro brine shrimp without being thawed?

And guys, I need help persuading my mum so she would get me market prawns and tilapia. I asked her about prawns she said they were too expensive while tilapia she responded "Are you crazy? Why do you want a tilapia for your fish??" My parents does not support me keeping fish that's why they just got me a 55gal... I tried by telling here if she doesn't get prawns, I'll get worms(which she totally hates)... I thought she will get freaked about seeing worms in the house that she will buy prawns but now she just ask about the price of those mealworms.... I tried explaining that I will need to buy tons if I were to feed my aro mealworms and prawns are cheaper she still doesn't believe me so later we are going to the LFS to check the price... Tips anyone?

Thanks
Start saving up LOL fish keeping is an expensive hobby

Best staple there is...alot better than your super worm staple...unless you are able to feed tens of kinds of foods to provide the best variety possible, I dont see how you could do without pellets. As you can see from the sticky, boydo has such a variety, but he still has to use pellets.

I totally agree with you on that. If you want to give him/her a treat try live bloodworms every now and then.

Just got back from my LFS. As I was in a hurry I just bought ghost shrimps, 20 baby carps(I think they are carps..) and 30 crickets. The total was MYR3 which is less than USD1... Over at my LFS I glanced at a sign saying "tilapia". As it was just a short glance I didn't care much. When I got home I suddenly thought"Oh crap why didn't I bought tilapia??". Well now I know that they sell tilapias and I am going to get some tilapia and earthworms next week. And I had luck persuading my mum now. But there is no firm answer yet. And I say canned shrimp selling cheap but I forgot to look at what brand it is can I feed it as part of my aro's diet? If so, how often should I feed him that? And what are Dried Maggots for as food?

Thanks

BenSow, I don't want to hurt your feelings, but i think you made a bad choice in buying a sliver. I know you are aware it's going to get too big for your 55 gal and you'll need to get rid of it, but i have a suggestion I’d like you to think about.
Considering you're already having problems with the silver because you can persuade your Mum to buy the food you want it to eat and the fact you know the tank is going to get too small very soon. Why don't you think about taking the fish back and getting something that can live for many years in your 55 gal.
You're going to get attached to your fish and when the time comes you might be sad to see it go, you may even grow it big enough that it becomes hard to get rid of, meaning you end up keeping it in a small tank longer than you anticipated and you start to beat yourself up over it. You could end up unintentionally hurting your prize aro! People are often put off by the size of silvers once they start to get biggish.
There are plenty of fish that can live in your 55 for a long time, all through your school and if you treat them right all through your collage. If you can imagine how it would be to beat yourself up over the wrong choice of fish because of the negative things that could happen as a result of owning it, imagine how it would be if you own a fish healthily for the next 5 or 6 years.
Even better, imaging in 5 or 6 years when you're working and you still have the passion for an Arowan but you have the money to buy you own monster tank and feed the fish whatever you please, why, you live in KL, in 5 or 6 you'll be buying a set up with an Asian Arowana in it.
Seriously BenSow, give it some thought, is now really the right time for you and an arowan?
I sure you can still post here if you want to, and I’m pretty sure everyone will support you in becoming knowledgeable about aros, Asian or silvers. Honestly I respect your enthusiasm in buying own and you have great taste because you love the best fresh water aquarium fish there are, but you’re just not set up for owning one yet. Please give it some thought.

I don't know much about different species of fish but I’m sure some of the other posters can throw a few ideas in.

Ok guys, started talking to mum and dad about upgrading to a bigger tank.... It may happen next year... But do not have details yet.
thats great!...problem is, you need to convince them to do it next month, not next year...your aro will basically outgrow your tank faster than you can upgrade even if you were to upgrade right now.
