For me it's the enjoyment when people I have over saying how much they love my tanks..........

It's a HOBBY, not a LIFESTYLE. Some people on this site do go to extremes. Perhaps they lack something in their lives and fish fill that void. I don't mean to be offensive, but we have to keep things in perspective. Fish are not like kids, dogs and cats. They are a hobby.

I agree fully! I just say it in a more direct fashion, and that usually gets me into trouble.

Good thread OP, I too can't believe how serious people take this hobby on this site. Its like a bunch of European soccer hooligans who's favorite club just lost a match. Don't get caught in the middle with a different jersey, or your going down!

did you just watch "Eurotrip"?

:)

as far as the topic goes, I just love watching fish grow, develop and colour up.

nothing beats watching healthy fish grow up. and thrive for years and years in your tanks.

Its just something to do to take my mind off other stuff in my life.

I used to be absolutely obsessed with it, like it was literally my life, but now its just there. And when I'm sad about something or need to take my minds of things, usually its relationships, thats what I go and do.

So it seems like after a break-up or if I'm having relationship problems my tanks suddenly flourish and I get a bunch of new additions. And in the summer or if I'm steady at the moment my plants all die-off and I even tend to lose a fish or two in the summer months. It doesn't really bother me, they're only there to help me take my mind of things in bad times.

So thats me lol

I have to agree with you up to that point... dogs and cats are just different type of pets.. but the 2 cats and dog in the house are no less or more important to me then some of my fish. not all.. and my horse means more to me then a job I had, and a fair amount of people I've known.

when anything consumes your life it's unhealthy.. /shrug But with that being said fish are liveing creatures and though we may not exactly bond with them always as we might another creature. we do have a responsibility as owners to care for them. unfortunately apart of caring for something is people get attached. Some more then others.

I would expect anyone into the hobby so far that they rely on it to put a roof over their head and food on the plate would take it very seriousely. as would the hobbists breeding endangered or threatened species.

It's really about perspective.

I do agree it should not consume your life. And some people do keep them to fill a void, so be it, lots of worse things they could do I suppose.

I just can't put fish on the same level of being as model airplanes and stamp collections...maybe I need therapy, but I truly try and respect living things that are under my care.

And just for curiosities sake, what is it about fido that makes his life more valuable than bubbles? Not trying to stir up trouble or anything, I truly want to know what, to you, is the difference between a walking animal and a swimming animal.

HOWEVER never would a child come close to being comparable to any pet hobby or habit. Children always come first.

Of course I remember a comedian I saw, said fish aren't a hobby. Its a TV you gotta feed.

How do you make the distinction between fish and dogs and cats? Although I'm sure there are some people that do it, fish keepers in general do not keep fish to fill a void; they do it simply for fun. How did you arrive at that conclusion? It's a complex, interesting, and fun hobby. I think you have an oversimplified view of keeping fish.

Fish keeping IS a lifestyle for many people, maybe not for those of you who keep goldfish in a bowl. You can spend your whole life working and then coming home and spending time with your fish; people also make social connections with others about fish. Also, fish keeping can very well be a part of personal identity.

Agreed, a hobby. If I had no job or friends then maybe a lifestyle since I would be bored senseless but otherwise it's never too good to be crazy about 1 thing.

IMO the reason why Fido doesn't compare to a fish because dogs are loving, they interact with you. I mean INTERACT not just go to you when your going to feed them like a fish. Plus fish just have that barrier that you can't breach unlike a dog, cat, parrot, hamster, frog, that you can actually take out and play/interact with. Literally a barrier too....the glass. Sure it's great when they breed and follow your hand around, but it's not interacting. A dog or cat will come to you not for food soley at least and want you to pet them or interact with them. Even a guinea pig will after some time get used to their owner and will want that petting that interaction that they get from their owner. A fish on the other hand wants food....that's it. Sure you might be one of the lucky few that the fish seemed happy to see when you walk in the door from work, but really is it happy to see you or happy knowin that your going to feed it?

Myself I have alot of hobbies in my life but fish keeping by far is the most relaxing hobby out of all of them. Also since I work full time and crazy hours I just like to relax after work and enjoy watching my fish. Especially listening to the water sound actually helps me nap:) Even though it costs alot it motivates me to even work harder.

This is what I'm talking about. If I had to explain what I thought about the fish vs dog/cat comparison. I would use this quote.

I can't believe that some people on here compared fish keeping to caring for a child...:WHOA::screwy: IDK even know what to say about that; I know it wouldn't be anything good so I'll just keep my mouth shut and let them live in their fantasy land. They have bigger issues than arguing their case... IMHO
