Are pure Rays a thing of the past?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The chipping route would be interesting but I imagine prices would increase for a chipped pure blood.

Also, who would monitor and distribute the chips? There would have to be a controlled data base...

Yes and then everyone needs chip readers, and writers or you'd have to order the chips. Costs would go way up. Breeders would have to chip so many fishes.

It is odd that some people call bdxleo hybrids.

If bd/leos aren't actually hybrids then why not refer to them all as p13s? If not hybrids then they are simply higher and lower grade p13s with two different names. The chipping idea is interesting but my fear is it would be prime for people to lie about their rays, by putting a chip in a ray that calls it one thing when in reality the ray is something totally different.

Don't they already lie about what there ray is? The whole any black ray in the mix and it is auto bd. Any motoro becomes marble. Chips wouldn't really change that. Just the prices

Then having said that would it really be lying since they are the same anyway just different grades?

One thing I've noticed is that my hybrids grow much faster than my pure bloods.

Have any of you noticed this "hybrid vigor?"

Many hybrids lose their fertility in the animal kingdom, I haven't noticed this much with rays. No factor with this genus which is an interesting thing.

hybrids are cool, yes, but I would hope and pray we never lose pure stock.

Oddly enough my male bdxleo has grown faster in the same timeframe as my bdxpearl. Granted she is/was larger to start with but she has only put on 2" of disc width in the time it has taken my male to go about 5-6" in disc width.

It could be because she was 12" to start with and he was 6-7". She was so much larger then him to start and now he has almost caught her.

The hybrid vigor could come from some mixes and not others.

A quick search shows chips are a little over $10 each IMO that cost is negligible on a ray that can cost well over 1K
The main problem would be developing a genetic data base to compare individual rays to and qualified personnel to interpret the results.

I'm wondering to see if my experience is common with growth rates. Your experience suggests it's not a sure thing. Could be no correlation just wondering if others noticed same thing.

BD Pearl sounds like an awesome mix
