Are Silver Arowanas legal in Australia?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
no need to end the discussion at all guys. it is up for review right now.
they are illegal to import. not illegal to own. they are no longer on the noxious list per se, they are on the grey list with ohter fish they were unsure about. by the end of the year they are supposed to have assesed the species on the grey list and move them to allowable or noxious. you guys have a good case to have them moved to the allowable as they should not be seen as noxious. write or better call the ornamental fish policy working group ( daffa governement and ask to speak to someone on the review board) and submit that they be made legal on the grounds that they are an expensive fish and worth big money to industry, that they have low fecundity and would not even survive a winter below QLD, the release events would be minimal and they would not likley establsih a wild pop due to their reproductive biology and environmental requirements. further there is no eveidence of wild populations establishing even though some individual fish have been caught, in fact this only betters the case... they are not a hardy species as can be seen by their past history of becoming endangered.
we can make these legal and now is the chance. so do something about it ok. if you want more info contact me.

First I want to say that Scleropages formosus was rejected for inclusion on the list of specimens suitable for import on the 26th of September 2007.I am unaware of any proposed amendments.

In saying that.Lets look at a couple of things here.
It will be different in all states so I suggest you look at the lists for your relevant state.

Here in Queensland we have 2 list we go buy.

1st list is the Federal allowable live import list.....http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/trade-use/lists/import/index.html
What is not on this list can not be imported into the country anymore.Note, this only means it can not be imported into the country.Any act doing so is illegal but it is not a law governing fish that were already here or bred here after. Many SA/CA cichlids are not allowed to be imported anymore but are fully legal to be traded or kept here as well since they were already here before the amendments. This applies to all fish not on the noxious species list at state level.

The noxious species list...This one is for my state, Queensland. I have been told they are in the process of making a federal list to apply to the country as a whole..

Nothing on this list can be traded or kept.If caught while fishing it must be destroyed on the spot.

Here is the catch. Anything not on the noxious species list is in what is called a grey area..Meaning until it is placed on the noxious or invasive list, you can keep or trade them as long as they were already here before the amendment to the import list or bred from such stock afterwords. (Again, check your state list for what is noxious or invasive) :)

As for Silvers being legal. They can't be imported but again check your states noxious species list. Here in QLD, they are legal to own.:)

In oz you can own or keep any fish thats not on the Noxious fish list for that state , if it goes on the list you can agree to get the fish microchiped and keep it for life after they go on the noxious list ( as long as you have had it before it goes on the list)so we can't get Channa legaly.

This is what I have been told.

Ausarow - very informative. So your saying they are on the grey list until a decision is made. Do you know if this is the same for asian arowanas? Can I also ask how you know so much?

Ausarow - also why wouldnt the silver survive in winter if Jardinis can?

Greenterra - also very informative. Do you know where can I find this list for NSW? I've google everything and can only locate the Victorian list. If Asians are not on the 'noxious species list' then I guess I can purchase one as long as I dont import it.

He said they wouldn't survive a winter south of Queensland, i.e they would survive a winter in Queenslnd, which is where Jardinis naturally occur.

This is the best I can find so far.I hope it helps some.
Noxious or invasive http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/pests-diseases/noxious-fish-and-marine-vegetation
Fish species which cannot be imported into NSW without a specific permithttp://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/habitat/help/permit/noxious-fish

I hope this gives you a start:)
