Are Silver Arowanas legal in Australia?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
just letting you guys know the review for the arowana to be moved from the grey list to either the allowable or the noxious list will be determined in canberra on the 7/11/08.
ill let you know what i know when i know. the arowana will be reviewed for its suitability for state noxious controls. this does not mean it will be allowed but that theywill be checking for its suitability.

So much information to consumed but thank you for clarifying my query. My fingers are crossed with the upcoming review that it wont go to the noxious list. I am almost certain however that it wont go to the allowable list.

And please keep us updated.

Thanks Mate.

yeah i am myself rather concerned that they will not look at it properly.

one thing that really has me concerend is that they may be worried about hybridising with the native jar. not that they have any proof or suggestions that this may happen or is a big risk. really it may well depend upon if they just want to finalise this quick or if they really do want to follow the criteria properly. with like 400 fish species to work through they will be running low on time.

for example they may just say ahh nah it has a cousin fish in AUS already and it may breed with that if it gets out...NOXIOUS.

i did adress that issue with one guy but it may never reach the table.
the arow should be allowed here ( states) going by their rules so if they do the job right it will be allowed to some extent in some states so im still half hopeful.

it should not be seen as a high risk but yeah im crossing fingers too mate. it seems they are tight lipped at the moment and some say they are out to just ban a heap of stuff but for now we have to have faith they will do what they are supposed to do with each species as required.
they already met once about this recently and who knew about it?
i would say that the species/science have and has already been assesed mostly and the next meeting will be an agreement process more so.

what will come of this if they do put it on a federal ban list is a tightening down on them. they will have to put more officers on to cover the new laws. BUT we are also yet to see what they wish to do about the arowana if they want to sieze them or not. remeber they cant kill them. i was told that even today your not allowed to have them. you cant have them in possesion..but who was going round taking them off people and what would they do with them.. the fish is in a special league and deserves rightful recognition of its status and inherant charactersitics of being endangered already and not a big risk.

so either way we are about to be hit with a whole new sitation regardless and they have a lot of things they can do to write up laws on arows. some of which wouldnt suit a loose allowable situation. so i have a feeling they will implement that because the framework is there for that.

tell you what though, theres so many illegal fish here now of various types if they do make a large noxious list that they are going to have a big job ahead of themselves.

you know i did uncover something interesting. if you had a legal arow, back from say when they could enter the country and you bred that with another legal one and could prove that then you are legally allowed to trade them.

go figure!!! but that will change too now, depending on where arows are placed in their framework.. ill let you know the day i know something.

So let's say Aro's are placed on the Noxious List, what then happens to Silver Arowanas purchased prior to these changes? Will they require private keepers to destroy them? And if so, could this ever be policed effectively?

Im reviving this thread because its imporant! I found this thread when i asked google if they are legally legal. Have the laws changed yet?? I need an arowana in my life. Where can i get one

my toga was $80 but was really small when i got her, but they do grow quick.
jardinis are more expensive though...
