Ok so are we cruel for keeping fish in a tank.

The fish we keep have a safe home and never have to worry about food, getting killed or anything realy.
some of the fish iv kept were so stupid probably never even noticed they were in a tank
but we all know alot do.
The way they come to the glass when u walk past, when they beg for food and so on.
so is that a fair trade freedom for a life of no worrys?

what do you guys think?

It can be said that it is cruel to keep fish in glass boxes but the best of us do the best we can.

You could ask the same thing of keeping any pet. We won't let our cats outside. Is it cruel to keep them safe instead of letting them follow their instincts and hunt? Legit question, but I think you could drive yourself crazy with it...

I asked that question before too. If you compare it to what they are used to in nature than you may get an answer that you would not like. It is a relative question. It's like calling a house clean. It is comparing it to what. If you over analyze anything, it can get you thinking. It is like feeding pinkie mice to snakes. Another example would be the fish raised in the farm for food or cow for beef. It would almost be same thing to asking a person that have been drinking alcohol a little too much and ask him/her are you dreaming or is this reality. But some people are really nuts depending on how you look at it.

Not any pet as some are able to let their cats out to roam.

I guess its just one of those things.
there will be for and against all day.

mine seem happy.

Dont really think its cruel unless they are mistreated. If you think about it some of the captive breeding programs are the only way some fish are able to reproduce, since so many rivers migration routes have been blocked not allowing some species to breed in nature. So without captive fish many species would die out. Just like some people will argue that crate training dogs is cruel. If any of us were cruel to our fish/pets we would not be here learning and sharing info on how to better care for them. If your fish are cared for right they have IMO the chance to live a much less stressed life in aquariums than in the wild.

good point and if captive bred they dont know any different.

i suppose its only cruel if they are kept in poor conditions, tiny tank, no water changes etc other wise if enough space is provided i dont see a problem with it as they are pretty much treated like kings well in certain tanks anyways, there will always be people that mistreat animals in general and it will never be stopped

in my opinion dont buy a fish if it cannot be housed in a tank of a suitable size, not just what you can get away with, bare minimum is unfair
