Are we cruel!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A lot of fish in the wild die and or are fished out, Atleast a good experienced fk can provide a good home and healthy diet!

Although I do feel bad for the majority of fish that are kept in aquariums due to the fact that there's a lot of people that have no clue on how to provide a beneficial environment, Atleast were all here to learn.

Some of us out there are cruel for keeping fish in poor conditions. Even a fish in too small of a tank may still live better than it would in the wild. But that's looked as cruel by others in the hobby. The poor and mistreated fish come from most fish stores like petsmart and such. I've been in a lfs where they kept a 12 inch texas cichlid in a 20 gallon high for a few weeks till it was bought.

my fish all stick halfway up out of the water at the same time, and yell "HEY!!". It startles me half to death, so they're cruel too.

By placing fish in captivity, we only do to them what we have already done to ourselves. If it is cruel, it is usually not done in the spirit of cruelty, but with the cruelty of our misconceived habits.

As long as they're well taken care of & properly housed, no I don't think its cruel. Now for those that keep truly exotic pets (Tigers, monkeys etc) and *think* they can produce the same enviroment in which that animal lives in is cruel but that's a subject for another day lol

You could ask the same thing of keeping any pet. We won't let our cats outside. Is it cruel to keep them safe instead of letting them follow their instincts and hunt? Legit question, but I think you could drive yourself crazy with it...

I've thought the same thing many times but of course come to the same conclusions. I'd rather know that my cat is safe in the house verus being stolen or having someone terrorize them, which has happened. Now if you live out in the country and have plenty of land for them to be safe on, that's a different story.

so we all agree its better for them.
so its worth trading freedom to roam for a safe pampered life. thanx guys.

here's a way to get unbiased answers....ask on a fish keeping site? lol

i think a counter argument can be made for every point brought up so far

My fish were born captive so they don't know any different. I try to keep them from watching films like Free Willy or Finding Nemo so they don't suddenly realise they're actually my prisoners. Not one of them has confronted me so far, so I guess I'm doing well :naughty:
