I agree we can all use more education and if a fellow customer directly asks me a question im happy to answer it for them to the best of my ability however out of respect for the lfs I dont feel its my place to throw in my 2 cents anytime I feel the need as a mechanic I know I would not be happy about it in my workplace

I'm exactly the same way. I see a lot of people making mistakes at the local pet stores but I don't feel it's my place to go up to them and start lecturing them. When I see a person with a Fluval nano tank in one hand and a bag of Oscars in the other, I can only shake my head and hope they like the fish enough to read up on them once they get home. I spoke to one of my co-workers (a vet who's been working with fish for about 20 years), and told her how frustrated I get when I see people making BAD buying decisions at the LFS. She agreed but said... at least it's a fish that person is buying, and not a dog. ITA about that.

As long as we're on the topic, I heard a girl at the LFS go, "Look at how that chinchilla is chasing all the other chinchillas" as she pointed to some blood parrots. She was about 18 years old. I tried not to laugh as I hurried away.

OMG My Uncle use to call Cichlids ChinChilla's aswell

I was hired at a pet store to take care of the fish years ago, but then they found out I could do math (duh) and decided I should be a cashier. Well, I can do math on paper - which was part of the hiring test - but I having a learning disability which I even told them about that makes me horrible as a cashier. They put me there anyhow and lost $200 in a day due to my confusion between what coupons were coupons and what were store rebates for later date. Surprisingly I didn't get fired, or transfered to the fish dept - don't blame all the customers for being stupid - sometimes the store managers don't know how to hire or place employees where they need to. In the time I was there, I quit after a couple months because I wasn't in fish where I wanted to be, I saw more people trying to be good but failing due to lack of knowledge - or lack of pocketbook.

We were all newbies once so when i hear people mispronounce a name i try to politley correct them, you dont want to embarress them or make them feel stupid.

When i was starting out i was lucky, the fish dept of my lps is run by a real easy going bloke, he was always happy to spend a good 25 -30 mins talking to me and explaining things. Now we are like mates and everytime i go in there to buy fish food etc i spend more time chatting with him than buying anything, nearly all the fish they sell were bred by him.

If your somone who works in a lfs, be patiant and try to politly educate them, if they dont want your advice becouse they think they know it all, so be it, there will always be people like that, you should just bag up what they want and send them on their way so you can sxpend more time helping those that want to be helped.

In one of my LFS the owner like to joke with customers. couple weeks ago I buying a Brycon and this customer asked the owner as he was bagging my fish "are those aggressive" the owners says yes very aggressive. The customer then asked "how big does it get". He says 10 feet! LOL funny thing is the customer really believed him. The customer says Oh wow how did I miss those...
