I understand that. I just wanted to get a good conversation going about something that really is a serious problem, especially here in the US. How are we supposed to compete with the rest of the world when our kids can't even form a properly structured sentence? I'm not angry about it, I just thought it would be an interesting topic to discuss.

yea i know what you mean here in FL we have the FCAT (florida comprehension assessment test) if you cant pass it you cant pass high school.... lots of kids cant pass and the parents are blaming the teachers.... if they cant pass a simple test imagine trying to get a real job in the real world where there is completion from all the other states.... florida was thinking of making the test easier and i was like great thats something going to go over well, :screwy:

NCLB is a very complex issue so I will keep this simple. NCLB dictates how and what I teach. It even dictates how many minutes a day I must teach any given subject. It creates a system based all on test taking and of little creativity and critical thinking. It also does not help failing schools and only penalizes them if test scores objectives are not reached.

This is why just last week I spent the afternoon lecturing my first graders why its so important to properly bubble in thier tests! :screwy:

NCLB is also IMPOSSIBLE. Some children will be brighter than others and its just a plan fact. Their are to many outside factors outside of school that influence a childs learning, whether it be genetics, IQ, parenting skills, resources, money, home life, etc.

Whether the general public wants to believe it or not some children will get left behind.

Ok I better stop now before I get fired typing this on a school computer!

Thanks for the reply and your opinion, it's complex legislation. Which when read by 3 people , they will all interpret it 3 different ways..gotta love politicians..:nilly:

Here’s my 2 cents and then I’m done....How a local school board interprets and sets policy to meet the criteria of the NCLB is not in the interest of the students or the teachers. That's where I see the major conflict...The School boards reality is to make sure their federal funds are not cut off...again politicians in the guise of educators....yah!:headbang2

I agree totally with your last statement:
"Whether the general public wants to believe it or not some children will get left behind. "

However in a PC world ( which almost smacks of Socialism? hmmm?) they want equality in all aspects....there I'm done...let's get back to discussing our hobby:headbang2

Im 2 years older then that. I wonder what society thinks how I should type?

The majority of people who use 1337 or shortword on this board probably do it because they don't see the sense in putting that little bit of extra effort to make everyone's day easier whilst they read it. Its the small minority who I think actually have something wrong with them. If you've been taught English all your life and still cannot spell, uhh well what can I say?:(

I agree completely Mr. Pleco. A friend of mine from high school is now a high school principal. He fights NCLB constantly, and all the board cares about is test results because of the impact on school funding. How can you really educate children when you have to fight the government just to get enough funding to pay your teacers, who, IMO, are already underpaid???

Once a school is out of compliance, the state can stop funding, come in and take over, hence schools do everything in their power to work within the given misguidelines.

Bottom line

1.NCLB sucks.
2.If you can't read a post, skip over it. It is not the end of the world.
3.If a misSpelled word ruins your day, you have no life.:D

Quit whining, people have no obligation to please the English teachers and college educated citizens in this world.

Although I have great grammar and mechanics:grinno:, this is just a fish forum and I do not watch for mispelled words or grammar errors.

I mean North Carolina!:headbang2

BTW that was a Roy Williams jab for the other 99.999999 per cent of the world that does not reside in Kansas....:naughty:

If you put the large red "S" to signify that I had misspelled the word, well my friend, you are mistaken. It is spelled correctly. By the way, it doesn't ruin my day. I was making an observation. It is indeed just a fish forum, and at the end of the day, I really don't give a s**t. I put this topic in the lounge as a topic of conversation. If you don't have anything to add to it, why make a post?

:chillpill:cranky, I did add something to this thread, I added my opinion which was
1. NCLB sucks
2. A mispelled word isn't the end of the world:chillpill:
3.Sometimes people dont want to spend time typing out every word or are in a hurry, so they type it phonetically, leave letters out, or use abbreviations.

Have you never used abbreviations on this forum??? it is the same concept- People are in a hurry or don't want to waste time...
